Manhire Opticians

Manhire Opticians Manhire Opticians, on Mountain Ave in Hackettstown, NJ, since 1973. Experience, Quality, Price...Why would you go anywhere else for your eye care? Douglas R.

We are a second generation family optical business. Doug's Father, Robert G. Manhire, was an optician in the army during World War II. He outfitted an army truck with optical equipment and created the first mobile optical shop. His idea enabled the army to go out and serve the troops wherever he was needed. Robert's first store was on South street in Morristown, NJ. He also opened a second location in Somerville, NJ. Manhire Opticians was started in February 1973. We were the first Optical Shop in Hackettstown and we were located on the left side of the building where Mama's Pizza is now located. In 1983 we purchased the 171 Mountain Ave. location and renovated the over 200 year old structure to accommodate our business.

What are sunglasses really doing for your eyes?

Are sunglasses just another stylish accessory or are they the key to good eye health?

“There’s definitely a fashion element to sunglasses that people look for, but there are health benefits to wearing sunglasses as well,” says Elliot Levine, M.D., an ophthalmologist.

The most important benefit of wearing sunglasses is that they protect your eyes from ultraviolet (UV) light. UV light can have harmful effects on the eyelid, cornea, lens and retina.

When to wear your shades -

Do you only wear sunglasses on sunny summer days? If so, you’re doing your eyes a disservice. Sunglasses are necessary year-round says Dr. Levine.

“Whether it’s winter or summer, cloudy or sunny, you’re always subject to ultraviolet exposure,” he says.

Eye protection is especially important if you’re on or near a body of water.

“Not only do you get direct sun exposure, but you also get reflected light from the water,” he says. Excessive UV exposure can lead to a corneal burn.

Why Is Dry Eye So Difficult to Treat?

Many people living with dry eye feel misunderstood and unsatisfied with their treatment, according to a new survey. Health Union interviewed 415 Americans with chronic dry eye about their experience managing the condition. Survey respondents mentioned these frustrations:

Difficulty finding relief from dry eye symptoms - Almost half (48%) of patients with dry eye said they followed their treatment plan carefully, but only 13% experienced lasting relief

Frustration with how dry eye is diagnosed or perceived - Between a quarter and a third of people say that their condition has been written off as an “old person’s disease” or attributed to something less severe such as allergies

Struggling with the debilitating symptoms of dry eye - Many people struggle with multiple symptoms such as dryness (76%), foreign body sensation (64%), eye fatigue (62%), light sensitivity (62%) and blurred vision (60%), as well as burning, scratchiness and itchiness.

Experts say dry eye is often mistaken for other conditions. However, there are many treatment options today and finding a solution may involve some trial and error. Many people find it necessary to combine therapies and make a few lifestyle changes.

Give us a call to make an appointment and explore treatment possibilities for your particular symptoms. New products are being introduced frequently. We care about your eyes! Why would you go anywhere else for eye care?

Halloween Warning! Never Buy Costume Contact Lenses Without a Prescription!

How can Halloween contacts be dangerous?

Packaging that claims 'one size fits all' or 'no need to see an eye doctor' is wrong. Non-prescription costume contacts can cut, scratch and infect your eye if they don't fit exactly right. They should be customized and tailored to each individual.

Mis-sized lenses can cause corneal abrasions, corneal ulcers and potentially blinding painful bacterial infections like keratitis. Costume or theatrical contact lenses also might let less oxygen through to the eye, because the paints and pigments used to add color make the lenses thicker and less breathable.

Treating these injuries can require eye surgery, like a corneal transplant. And treatment doesn’t always work. People have been blinded by costume contact lenses!

We aren't trying to scare you, but it's important to be informed.

We care about your eyes! Have a safe and happy halloween!

SUNGLASSES are must-have eyewear, helping minimize brightness in any season or place where the sun and its reflective rays impact your eyes and your vision.

Available in many shapes and styles, sunglasses are more than fashion accessories—they are important tools to protect your eyes from ultraviolet (UV) rays, the radiation energy produced by the sun. These UV rays—including UVA and especially UVB—damage the eye’s surface tissues, cornea and lens . Over time, that damage can lead to cataracts , macular degeneration, and other vision-stealing eye conditions.

When you purchase sunglasses, either prescription or non prescription, from Manhire Opticians, we will fit your sunglasses and make sure they are comfortable, and our good service doesn't end there.......whenever you need them adjusted, cleaned, or nose pads changed, we will do this for you at no additional charge.

Stop in and take a look at our many styles and sunglass lens choices. We look forward to helping you choose the perfect pair for your lifestyle!

Happy Valentine's Week! We thought you might enjoy learning how Valentine's Day became a celebration back during the Roman Empire. The popular belief about St. Valentine is that he was a priest from Rome in the third century AD. Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage because he thought married men were bad soldiers. Valentine felt this was unfair, so he broke the rules and arranged marriages in secret. When Claudius found out, Valentine was thrown in jail and sentenced to death. There, he fell in love with the jailer's daughter and when he was taken to be killed on 14th February he sent her a love letter signed "from your Valentine".

The first Valentine's Day was then celebrated in the year 496 and used by people to express their feelings to those they love.
