🧠✍️ Big brains & bright minds!
Dr. Sarah had an amazing time hanging out with some truly gifted & talented students in Woodbridge last week! They dove into what it’s like to be an author, a doctor, and explored all the cool things our brains can do. 🧠💡
Let’s just say… the future is in very good hands.
Thanks for the warm welcome, Woodbridge — can’t wait to visit again soon! 💫📚

💥 Dr. Sarah delivered an exceptional presentation that combined humor (🤣) with practical wisdom for PreK educators. Her ability to break down "complex information into bite sized chunks that we can use in our classrooms" made the session both informative and immediately applicable 🧠. "She spoke with us not at us," creating a relatable experience that left attendees eager to implement her techniques and requesting "to have her back for PD in the future."

We cannot wait to see Stafford again! The district sure is lucky to have such amazing staff!! 🫶🏼

With screen time, our visual centers can be enhanced in the areas of the brain related to fine motor skills can actually increase. Certain aspects of problem-solving can improve too. It can help with engagement, motivation, and learning when introducing tablets to the classroom.

The real issue has been with kids and teens who:

1) watch extended amounts of television (more than a couple hours a day)
2) become addicted to electronic devices
3) watch violent content

At its foundation, effective parenting is mindful parenting. When parents and teachers mindfully work to teach emotional, behavioral, and cognitive control in an emotionally supportive, deliberate manner, kids are set up for success. The point is it takes brain power to come up with your own parenting philosophy and it takes practice to develop
your parenting skills.

While I fully support parents practicing mindful parenting, I prefer a different term. Mindful meddling is a more descriptive term for what I teach parents in my coaching practice. Because if you’re anything like me, there’s no way that you’re going to just lay back and let the world completely take over. You’re going to meddle. I happen to be a meddling pro. And meddling is okay. It’s actually extremely
beneficial when done with some balance.

We can help with the first one! ✔️

Raising brains is a common-sense strategy for applying the exciting field of brain development and neuropsychology to daily, practical parenting tasks. The point is for parents to look at their children through a different lens.

Moms and Dads can understand their own brains better as they work to raise happy, successful, fun, and connected children.

I saw this and it made me laugh - and if this doesn’t represent Hanukkah (or any other prolonged holiday celebration), I don’t know what does:

And honestly for me, it’s not the Hanukkah and Christmas celebrations that have my tinsel in a tangle - it’s the 12.5 days of winter break that lay ahead. I was recently talking to a member of our team, and though she’s usually full of routine to minimize chaos - her Amy G is puffin because Mr. BG is already out of ideas. We’re all struggling to comprehend these 12 days.

On the first day.. We lose our sh*t. Ha! I’m sorta kinda just kidding but... we really will if we don’t set reasonable expectations. For them, for you, for anyone around you this holiday season. So, how do we set reasonable expectations for everyone so that the time together isn’t full of tantrums and meltdowns from all age groups?!

If you really want to take advantage of TEACHABLE MOMENTS, focus on asking the questions.

Whenever Fronnie (remember, she’s the frontal lobe) is engaged, you’re teaching your child control. And there are a lot of questions you can ask Fronnie.

For example when baking treats for the holidays:
❓Do we add the chocolate chips or the butter first?” (Teaching sequencing—an important frontal lobe activity)

❓If they know the answer, then ask how they would find out if they didn’t know. (This teaches problem solving skills and critical thinking.)

􀁴􀀁 If they don’t know the answer, they get to actually solve the problem.

❓ “What does the recipe say? How much sugar do we need?” (This teaches them how to follow directions.)

􀁴􀀁 Double the recipe and ask them how much do we need to use of an ingredient—now it’s a math lesson!
