Real parents. Real questions. Real answers.

Hi 👋🏽 I’m Tina, a registered nurse, lactation consultant and sleep consultant based in NJ.

I get questions from families all the time about sleep! 😴

In this case, the parents are attempting to put baby down drowsy but awake.

This is an important skill - but for older babies!

At 5 weeks old, your baby is still a newborn. They either have light sleep or deep sleep. Drowsy but awake isn’t happening in their sleep cycles very much if at all.

Plus, it’s early to be concerned about healthy sleep habits. I don’t recommend any type of sleep training before 3 months.

It seems like this family might have unrealistic expectations for their baby at this age. My recommendation would be to enjoy the newborn snuggles, let baby sleep wherever they want (safely), and hold off on teaching healthy sleep habits for at least a few months.

What baby sleep questions do you have? Drop them in the comments below!

I won’t lie, I see every sleep consult I do as a challenge. That’s because there is no cookie cutter plan that fits all families. My goal is to create something custom and constantly adjust until we find something that works and feels comfortable. If you’re interested in hearing about how I work with sleep clients, message me to set up a free 15 minute call this week!

I often tell my clients to feed their newborns a minimum of 8-10 times per 24 hours. Looking at this baby, a few days after they were born, 24 breastfeeding sessions were charted (yellow blocks represent breastfeeding). 24!!! This is completely normal. Some feeding sessions might be 2 minutes and some might be 25. Some breastfeeding sessions might involve both breasts and some only one. It’s very common to feel like you spend all day feeding baby. As the weeks go on you will find your baby is stronger and more effective when feeding. Working with a lactation consultant, whether you are breast or bottle feeding, before and after birth is critical to feeling comfortable with feeding your baby. If you’re new here, I am Tina, a registered nurse and lactation consultant. I’ve been working with families to help feed babies for 8+ years! What baby feeding questions do you have for me??

My family welcomed our second baby girl this past Friday. I had a successful VBAC and am riding the high from that experience. I am looking forward to family bonding time over the next few weeks and will respond to any texts or emails within a few business days. Thank you to our doula and to all the perinatal resources that helped me along the way

When my baby was below birth weight at 3 weeks old, we panicked. We were given a plan to supplement, triple feed and figure out where the issue was. I had a crappy portable pump at home and a very kind stranger on Facebook gave me her Spectra within 24 hours. Many times parents have to start pumping out of necessity, not out of choice. And as a lactation consultant I want to give you all the tools to do that ASAP - so that entails having boxes full of donated pumps. Usually everyone wants to know what the best wearable pump is or how to hack your portable pump, but don’t skip over asking around for a pump that plugs into the wall and has a strong motor.

ANTENATAL HAND EXPRESSION aka prenatal pumping. I wanted to share what a “normal” amount looks like. At first you may just get drops, not even enough to draw up in a syringe. It’s easiest to use your hands to start rather than use an electric or manual pump. If you find you get 5-10mL you can switch to a pump. Always let your provider know that you are doing this.
