Real parents. Real questions. Real answers.
Hi 👋🏽 I’m Tina, a registered nurse, lactation consultant and sleep consultant based in NJ.
I get questions from families all the time about sleep! 😴
In this case, the parents are attempting to put baby down drowsy but awake.
This is an important skill - but for older babies!
At 5 weeks old, your baby is still a newborn. They either have light sleep or deep sleep. Drowsy but awake isn’t happening in their sleep cycles very much if at all.
Plus, it’s early to be concerned about healthy sleep habits. I don’t recommend any type of sleep training before 3 months.
It seems like this family might have unrealistic expectations for their baby at this age. My recommendation would be to enjoy the newborn snuggles, let baby sleep wherever they want (safely), and hold off on teaching healthy sleep habits for at least a few months.
