1. "Digital mental health companies" are different than private practice therapists who offer telehealth as part of their services. 2. These "Silicon Valley" models are dangerous, hiring unqualified, desperate therapists for a very low pay rate AND risk and sometimes sell outright your confidential information.
3. IMO fast food, factory-based, medical model treatment is innately dehumanizing, while transformative psychotherapy is the complete opposite.

Heavy advertising and other strategies from Silicon Valley’s playbook boost providers’ growth but not the quality of care.

Jonah Hill's documentary about his psychiatrist/therapist, Phil Stutz is trending on Netflix and social media. Jonah tells us that his therapy with Stutz has changed him on such a significant level, that he wants everyone to have access to the tools he's learned, hence the film. On the surface, this...

What I take away from this article:
1. How much mental health treatment is governed by non-mental health clinicians in the for-profit business world of insurance.
2. Only half of the people taking Lexapro kept taking it after 24 weeks.
3. How the effectiveness of this "short term", 8 week program is actually the equivalent of 31 once-a-week therapy sessions (almost a year with vacations, sicknesses, etc), not including 45 minutes of practice EVERY SINGLE DAY.
4. That researchers give almost no attention to the role of therapeutic relationship - in the end she says that apps may not work as well because "the benefit of having a meditation teacher is that you can ask questions".
Bottom Line: Relationship is a critical part of therapy and healing AND there really isn't an effective quick fix.

Researchers compared a practice of daily mindfulness meditation to taking Lexapro to control anxiety symptoms. The meditators got equivalent relief, without the side effects.

The past few years have shone a light on the social and relational foundation of mental health and wellness, thankfully opening a much-needed way out - a kind of oxygen in the "airless world" of our rigid medical and disease model of "pathology".

When you've experienced trauma, shame, anxiety, depression, etc. it can feel so scary to let someone really know you. Therapy is a great place to start taking the risk to be found and known.

First, antidepressants can be helpful for some people, and I consider them to be an important consideration for some people in mental health treatment. Second, mental health does not have a simple or single cause. People are complex and development unfolds from a web of organic (genes, temperament) and environmental (familial, social, cultural etc) experiences. Third, this simple story does harm in that too many people believe that something is organically "wrong" with them (imbalance), sometimes hindering recovery and often adding fuel to the fire of anxiety, shame and depression.

We don’t know how antidepressants work.

The promise of quick fixes and fad therapies are and have been a powerful part of of therapy culture. Everyone wants to feel better when they're struggling with mental health and wellness. But the hard truth is that human beings are complex, our past impacts our present, and that real change takes time. Take good care when choosing a therapist. If it sounds "too good to be true", it probably is.

Reading a therapist’s blog can give you a sense of how they think and how they work, in essence what it might be like to work with them. It can also give you new ways to think about yourself. Here’s my latest post…

HBO's series Euphoria is one of this season's most watched tv shows. It's intense, terrifying, traumatic and beautiful. It left me thinking...and wanting to share. 1. "Euphoria"...What kind of title is this??? I struggled each and every episode with this. There seemed to be an almost consistent, may...

Who sits on the couch?

I have had the deep honor of working with amazing people who often weren’t able to see the gifts they had to offer the world because of “problems” that had “taken over”.

Over the past ten years, I have worked with children and adults who were affected by anxiety, shame, depression, trauma, substance abuse, relational difficulties and parenting issues.

Clients in my current practice span the spectrum of age, race, gender, sexuality and culture, and typically come because they are motivated to create space for a more peaceful and harmonious relationship with themselves and others, so that they can unabashedly let their best selves shine.
