✨Postural Changes of Pregnancy✨
Many providers want to blame the hormone Relaxin for all of the aches and pains that women deal with during pregnancy. Did you know that this hormone actually peaks at around 12-14 weeks?
So, when that pesky pelvic girdle pain (SI joint or p***c symphysis) starts up later than 12-14 weeks, seemingly out of nowhere, why are we blaming Relaxin?
The truth is, it's so much more complicated than that. As your uterus and baby grow, there are lots of biomechanical and postural changes that take place, putting increased and different stresses and strains on muscles, ligaments, and other connective tissues.
Why do we bring this up?
Often, when women bring up their aches and pains during pregnancy, they're met with, "Well, your ligaments are super stretchy right now, it'll get better after the baby is born."
In reality, there are so many things we can do as pelvic floor physical therapists to help you combat these aches and pains by optimizing your spine, hip, and rib cage mobility early, keeping you strong, and educating you on ways to move your body to reduce the stresses and strains that drive pain.
