April 16 marks National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD)—a day dedicated to empowering individuals to make informed choices about their healthcare in advance. At Hospice of Washington County, we believe that having conversations about advance care planning is one of the most important steps people can take to ensure their wishes are honored when facing serious illness or at the end of life. Interested in a hospice evaluation? Give us a call at (301) 791-6360.

DoveTales designed for children (ages 4-17) who are coping with the death of a loved one. It is an educational, nurturing, and safe place for children and families to share their stories and to meet others who “get it.” Children/Families will have the opportunity to learn effective and practical skills for coping with their grief. There is no cost for children/families to participate in this experience, courtesy of various private donations, as well as community grants. DoveTales 2026 will be a one day, in-person experience held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at WCPS Claud E. Kitchens Outdoor School at Fairview. Registration is required, learn more here: https://hospiceofwc.org/grief-support/dovetales-childrens-program.

On this Gold Star Spouses Day, Hospice of Washington County pays tribute to the husbands and wives of service members who died while serving our country. The tradition of a gold star as a symbol for those who made the ultimate sacrifice began during WWI; families of the fallen replaced the blue star service flag hanging in their window with a gold star. If you are interested in volunteering with HWC’s Vet-to-Vet program, contact us at (301) 791-6360 or howc-volunteer@hospiceofwc.org.
