Guruji used to say that the practice of Ashtanga Yoga is both physical and spiritual. Over the years learning from my direct teacher and Guruji’s son Manju Pattabhi Jois, I learned that in the Ashtanga Yoga vinyasa system Yama, Niyama, Asana, and Pranayama are the external practices that are tangible and applied in our daily life. Dhyana, Dharana, and Samadhi are internal limbs that are experienced as a result of practicing the first 4 limbs to cleanse, strengthen, and create mobility in body and mind (this involves muscles, tissues, nerve channels, bones, etc).
In my experience, the 5th limb pratyahara, has been the bridge between these other limbs that allows for a deeper focus and meditative experience.
