In Health Healing and Beyond, T.K.V. Desikachar says “ there must always be alertness without tension and relaxation without dullness or heaviness. These qualities are achieved by recognizing and observing the reactions of the body and breath to various postures.

Once known, these reactions can be controlled step by step. This will help an individual endure and even minimize the external influences on the body such as age, climate, diet, and work.

It is the way in which we reduce avidya at the level of the body, for the body is an expression of the mind and it’s misapprehensions”

In Ashtanga Yoga, “Mysore practice” refers to a unique, self-led style of class named after the city of Mysore (now called Mysuru), where this teaching method originated. It’s like having a quiet, guided self-practice with a teacher supporting you individually through prescribed breathing and postures.

Instead of a teacher leading everyone through the same sequence at the same pace, Mysore style is:

⭐️Self-paced: You move through the sequence on your own, from memory

⭐️ Individualized: The teacher gives one-on-one guidance through sharing what they have learned from their teachers (parampara) and their direct experience from daily practice (pratyakṣa), assistance in postures, or new prescribed postures when student is ready

⭐️ Progressive: You gradually learn and experience growth within the series

Why it’s different compared to led yoga classes:

✅ No constant verbal instruction
✅ No synchronized movement with others
✅ More focused on breath, internal awareness, discipline, and consistency, which creates an introspective experience

I have learned that one of the main roles in the Mysore room, as someone holding space, is to teach practitioners to become independent in their own practice. And what a beautiful practice of detachment that is! 🙏🏼 🙇🏼‍♂️

This practitioner here has dedicated herself to a daily practice of Ashtanga Yoga for 1 year and 2 months and soon is time for her to fly away into new endeavors in her life ⭐️

If he carved a plant, he would exclude animals and humans. If he carved an animal, he would exclude humans and plants. If he carved a human, he would exclude plants and animals. If he carved a male, he would exclude the female. If he carved a female, he would exclude all males. God, he believed, was a container of all forms. And the only way to create this container was by creating no form. Or maybe God is beyond all forms, but a form is needed to access even this idea.
