Monday’s...am I right or am I right?

Classic diet antics. We don’t have to think about food as a diet anymore.

I’ve struggled with my food all my life, and continue to to this date. BUT...

I’ve continued to work on my relationship and be more flexible with myself and what I take in. I’ve found enjoyment in measuring and not measuring. I’ve started to really work on whatever the f**k perfect means, and started to accept that I love ice cream, but maybe don’t need it every night (this will forever be a battle).

When I talk to my young athletes, I wish I could go back to those days and create better habits. Since I can’t, the next best time is NOW!

Nevertheless, the diet starts Monday, and when you fall off... you get right back to it.

Nutrition is one of my favorite things to teach and talk about. It’s also one of the many things I have to work really hard on for myself.

Wherever you are, either keep it going or hop back on!

DM me if you want off the nutritional roller coaster!

Be simple and easy.

See, we still work on trunk stability!
The classic dead bug, of the contralateral sorts.

This one always gives people some issues trying to coordinate opposite arm and opposite leg moving through space while maintaining position through the trunk and stationary extremities.

This version of the dead bug is a personal favorite because of the coordination, but also because I can focus on separating the legs with one up and one down.

We definitely need to practice putting our body into novel positions and learning it’s okay to be there. But as my last post suggested, the basics are king. Master them! This is a variation of the foundational dead bug.

Trigger warning!⠀

You’ve probably heard many coaches tell you “don’t round your back!”⠀

I tend to agree! But, let’s not act like we live in a vacuum. If I load up to my 110% 1 rep max dead lift, around 1,054 pounds 😬, there’s a good chance I’m going to see some rounding out.⠀

Is this problematic? Sometimes⠀
Does it happen? Yes⠀
Should we train these positions so the nervous system doesn’t fight back and we end up with an injury? HELLLLLL YESSS!⠀

Is a rounded back the most advantageous position we can put ourselves in? Generally no, but it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. The benefit of teaching the body to find and be okay in these positions could be the difference between getting stronger and continually training, and keeping your chiropractor in business.⠀

I generally hadn’t put movements like the Jefferson curl in my programming. But, leave no leaf unturned. I’m training my body to be okay in all positions, so when I do return to breaking world records 💩, I can remain healthy doing it.⠀

Movement is power. What’s your take on this? Has it changed?

Happy 4th of July!

Morgan took this picture of me last year. We were taking a trip while she was still in training. I remember thinking and talking about how so many things hit differently at the time.

Fast forward a year, and I personally have described everything as “crazy times.”

But, someone stopped me to remind me, change isn’t crazy. And change happens every second. It’s important we pause, become aware of how we see and speak about each situation.

We are all capable of change, and it’s our duty to look at all things and adapt appropriately.

Take a second, take the 10,000 foot view of yourself, your inner circle, your family, the country. We are always changing...and that’s a great thing!

Happy 4th of July. And thank you to those that have served to protect and defend for this great country!

STOP‼️🛑

Maybe you’re getting ready to hit the road for the 4th of July, or maybe you’ve got a long commute to work. Or maybe you’re getting your walks and runs in. Whatever it is…listen up!

There’s a new podcast episode out. Rob Scott joined me and he lays down the hammer.

There’s a lot going on in the world right now, and we’re all feeling it. But, it’s our job to make sure we are seeing clearly through the lenses of our life. You are responsible for how you feel, react, take charge, etc.

Have you been trying to lose weight? Have you been trying to take on a new career, start a business? Do you feel like a victim? Great! This is for you!

Rob sheds light, by using me as an example at times, into how we can begin to have a mental shift and truly change the trajectory of our lives.

It was an absolute pleasure to host on the podcast

Take this weekend, give it a listen, and get ready, because the time to take charge of your mind and your life is now!

We’re ready for the 4th with our swag!🇺🇸🇺🇸

Finding, creating, and cultivating relationships whether one on one or within a community can be really difficult.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have found the Power Athlete crew back in 2010 and continue to grow within the community of amazing human beings.

In trying times, you lean on your community, your family, your friends, your partner. You open your arms and minds to give love and support, and often times a swift kick in the ass.

Grateful for those communities and people I can serve, as well as those that serve me!

Think I finally got hooked!💪

Trunk work

Yet another banger from

So many of my athletes either try to ignore, argue, or think they look stupid when doing warm-ups.

Yes, we are priming you for your workout ahead. Yes, we are trying to create trunk stability, but...

We are also trying to get your nervous system to be comfortable in all planes of movement so that it can support you in just that...your movement.

Take 5 minutes to really read what is written in this blog. Understand why we do so many of these things.

I’ve shifted my training to work with Dr. Zanis because I’ve neglected a lot of this, or haven’t implemented it in proper ways for myself.

There is a reason we do things.

Read. Ask questions. Optimize. Be a learner.

🌳 NEW BLOG: Why Your Trunk Will NEVER Be Stable

Many are back to barbell with a rude awakening: livingroom boot camp pillars, ab-bicycles or ab-mats don't help your core. Yeah, we said it.

Your spine doesn't work like this and if you're doing this for a six pack it's completely ridiculous.

Have we been duped by the fitness world? In his latest article, Doctor of Physical Therapy and Power Athlete Block One Coach, Matt Zanis [] explains why training the spine and trunk like this has nothing to do with how our body wants to experience movement. Instead, find out how to liberate your body to be strong AND mobile while exploring the power of movement for trunk strength and stability.

Z-Press💪

One of my favorites movements!

Taking the lower body out of the equation, this movement forces us to be strong through the middle of the body, aka TRUNK work!

It also requires more upper back strength and stabilization. Who doesn’t want to get f**king strong??

If you’re looking to build the meat shelf and develop long-term shoulder health, give these a shot!

What’s your favorite pressing variation?

PAIN‼️

How many of you are training through pain, or old nagging injuries? How often do you get that little nagging injury that irritates everything you do?

Now...looking at these pictures, how many of you would think my pain is on my left side? You’d be wrong!

The nervous system is an amazing software that we run on. On the left side, you see my body trying to balance out—there’s a major head tilt, legs scattered, etc. On the right, doesn’t look too bad.

My brain is really defensive over my right side (where my pain is). It’s perceiving threat. So, by strengthening the left side, my brain will ease up and let go of that pain I’m having on the right side from doing so much work!

Enter in the mixed grip pull-up. Technically, I’m supposed to be supinated on the side I’m pulling to (chin up grip), so I screwed that up.

Look what only a couple days difference makes when you swipe right!

The nervous system is truly amazing!🧠

What pain are you working through?? @ Hainesport, New Jersey

Communication, the elixir to all things better.

I have a new podcast episode out on iTunes (link in bio). I sat down with to talk about the difficulties surrounding our country, in specific, the current climate of racism.

We often hear folks say “communication is the key to successful relationships.”

But we all tend to avoid the difficult, uncomfortable conversations.

Anyone that knows me knows I’m pretty analytical, I try to think about everything from all angles, and take everything with a grain of salt. I try to sift through what seems to be bu****it.

But I also know, my experiences in life are vastly different from everyone else’s, especially black men, such as Cam.

I’m incredibly grateful to Cam for his friendship all these years. I’m incredibly grateful that he is willing to have an open conversation about his experiences, and allow me to ask questions to begin clearing up some of my confusion.

This is one conversation. It will take many from everyone. I still have so many questions I’d like to ask, but it takes time. Ask, listen, process, repeat.

You do not need to agree with me, or Cam. You do not have to know what you’re thinking immediately.

But, you can begin by trying to learn so you can formulate better opinions about all things.

Knowledge is power. Communication is power.

Be kind to everyone, including yourself, and the world will be a better place.

The old tension squat.

This has taught me a ton about my squat, and how I’ll cue to others while coaching.

More than that, it seemed representative of what’s going on in the world. Tension is running high right now, for obvious, and some very justifiable reasons.

What this tension squat reminded me of this morning was that I can create and feel tension within myself, and I can hold onto it, or I can release it.

I believe change starts within. I believe change starts with conversation. I believe change starts with trying your best to be a good human.

At some point, tension breaks, involuntarily, and creates an injury. How we bounce back from that injury depends on the mindset we hold.

The farther we divide, the farther we fall. Stand together, ask the difficult, uncomfortable questions so that you can learn. The right people will be happy to educate you, and allow you to learn so that you can grow and adapt from their perspective and experiences.

Stand together. Start with love. Have a conversation.

We all have a lot to learn from each other, but we only do that with communicating.
