Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Cemetery

Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Cemetery Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Cemetery was established in 1921 to serve the Catholic community of Half Moon Bay.

Our Lady of the Pillar Cemetery replaced Pilarcitos Cemetery as the Catholic Cemetery for the Half Moon Bay area. The first burial in Our Lady of the Pillar Cemetery occurred in 1921. The title Our Lady of the Pillar refers to the shrine Nuestra Señora del Pillar erected by St. James in Zaragoza, Spain, the oldest of the Marian shrines. Sunset Magazine included Our Lady of the Pillar Cemetery in its list of “Five Great Cemeteries Worth Exploring in Northern California.”

Please join us in wishing Kathy Wade both a big "thank you" and "congratulations" for her nearly 20 years of service to our Catholic Cemeteries!

She has been nothing short of a super hero when it has come to our cemetery operations for our southern cemeteries. Whether serving families at multiple cemeteries or leading the staff in our healthy walking challenges, Kathy has consistently shown us all what it means to lead by example.

You will be missed at Holy Cross Menlo Park, Our Lady of the Pillar, and St. Anthony. Your continued dedication to St. John Catholic Cemetery is more than appreciated.

We will miss you and wish you all the best that retirement has to offer!

Praying for our community on this feast day!

Today the Church honors Our Lady of the Pillar. Tradition holds that the Apostle St. James the Greater traveled to Spain to spread the Gospel, but had trouble converting the Spaniards. Becoming disheartened, he was preparing to leave when Our Lady appeared to him, encouraged him in his mission and told him not to give up.

St. James built the first shrine to Our Lady in Spain under the title of Our Lady of the Pillar.

Today we pray especially for Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Parish in Half Moon Bay.

"It's still okay to cry . . . God dwells with the broken-hearted" Many thanks to Caleb Wilde for sharing these words.

If you know she’s in heaven, and you hold onto that for solace, it’s still okay to cry. If you know where he’s going, and it gives you joy, it’s still okay to cry. If you’re glad she’s reunited with her loved ones, and you’re using that as a comfort, it’s still okay to cry. Even if you’re absolutely positively sure you’ll see them again in heaven, it’s still okay to cry. Because heaven isn’t just about joy, it’s not all happy songs and angels clothed in white. Heaven is wherever Love dwells, and that Love dwells in grief, it dwells in pain, it dwells in tears. Because sometimes heaven doesn’t wipe away all your tears, sometimes it gives you permission to feel your loss, to lean into you grief, to embrace your tears. Because God isn’t just at the religious gatherings, the spiritual celebrations, in the bird’s song and the sunshine, God dwells with the broken-hearted. Because “the tears of God are the meaning of history.”
