Heart Healthy Lifestyle Also Lowers Low Back Pain Risk.

Using data from the UK Biobank, researchers report that individuals who engage in a greater number of heart-healthy behaviors—including not smoking, obtaining adequate sleep, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a nutritious diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and maintaining healthy blood glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure levels—were about 12% less likely to develop low back pain.

Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementia Cases Will Quadruple by 2050.

Following an analysis of data from the Global Burden of Disease Study, researchers report that the number of older adults with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias (ADOD) increased from 18.1 million worldwide in 1990 to 49.1 million in 2021. With the aging on the global population and worsening metabolic health, it’s expected that 191 million seniors will be living with ADOD in 2050.

Nutritionists from University of Otago argue that fiber should be listed as an essential nutrient citing extensive evidence that adequate intake benefits body weight, cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure, and lowers long-term risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, colorectal cancer, and premature death. This designation would elevate fiber’s importance in dietary guidelines and public health policy, encouraging greater intake to support long-term health and disease prevention.

Nearly Half of American Adults Projected to Be Obese by 2035.

If current trends continue, it is estimated that 47% of adults in the United States—about 126 million people—will be obese by 2036, a five–percentage point increase from 2022. Walking Reduces Fatigue in Colon Cancer Patients.

Among more than 1,700 patients with colon cancer, researchers observed that those who began regular walking within a year of diagnosis experienced meaningful reductions in fatigue over the following two years. These findings add to a growing body of evidence supporting physical activity as an important component of cancer care.
