Looking to feel the reflexive action of your pelvic floor with breathing?

Try this rider hack:
Inhale through your nose slowly.
Exhale through pursed lips and feel your pelvic floor gently contract during this movement.

👉 One other helpful hint to test your endurance: If you can trot and talk at the same time, your breathing and cardiovascular endurance are on the right track! 🎙️

Your pelvic floor and diaphragm are a team — mastering breath will unlock better balance, relaxation, and connection with your horse. 🐎

This month's theme is all things pelvic floor! And you know me, if we're going to cover a topic, we're going to kick off with the basics.

👩‍🦰 1 in 4 women will experience pelvic floor dysfunction, and the number jumps to 90% for women over 50. For riders, this can show up as:

Leaking while riding or with barn chores (think about lifting that saddle onto your horse's back!)
Back or hip pain along with pelvic pain
Pelvic pain with riding or daily activities

Your pelvic floor shouldn’t feel tense when you ride — it should work reflexively, helping you move freely with your horse. 🐴💨

👉 Stay tuned this month as we dive deeper into pelvic floor health and how it impacts your performance as a rider.

I want to end this entire month, which can seem kind of somber when we talk about injuries (especially concussions), on a positive note.

One is the good news from the research on how simple things like wearing a helmet can reduce your injury risk (it's a 5-fold decrease)! This is one easy, actionable step you can take now. Want to learn more about fittings, when you should replace your helmet, and how to properly care for it after each ride? Tune into Episode 11 of the Mane Brain podcast!

Secondly, I want to encourage you to think of ways to improve your own fitness, and specifically, your balance. One unique element to our sport that you don't see in other outdoor field sports is how much we must focus on our balance, especially on a MOVING, UNSTABLE surface. So many injuries come from a loss of balance, so what if you could take steps to address this beforehand?

Options like a rider fitness assessment provides a vehicle for you and I to not only discuss your strength and flexibility, but more importantly, your balance. As a physical therapist who's been focusing on treating this specific diagnosis for my entire career, and as an equestrian, it's a topic I am both well versed in and super passionate to help with. Let me help you with a personalized approach to building this balance skill set. Are you ready to get started?

So this post is where the rubber meets the road. If you suspect a concussion, you should be evaluated! This also means you need to take a break from your riding. I know that's not easy to say, but it's true. Why am I advocating for this?

When we look at the research on recovery from concussion, there are three main paths to returning to sport: resting for a prolonged period, gradually increasing your activity, and returning to full activity with no break.

The evidence is clear on which paths are associated with the worst outcomes: returning to full activity with no break, and resting for a prolonged period of time.

What does this mean? If you return before you are ready, all you are doing is stretching out your recovery timeline. What could take 2 weeks for full recovery could instead take months, or leave you with residual symptoms.

You only get one brain, and you need to protect it!

Let's discuss first what a concussion actually is. It's considered a mild form of a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and no, it doesn't always require a bump or blow directly to the head. It also does not require having a loss of consciousness to be considered a serious injury.

For those who want to continue reading, I love including my receipts. This is the study I pulled this definition from.

This month, I want to focus on an often unspoken, but all too common topic: concussions. They are among the most common injury for riders, ahead of orthopedic concerns. What can we do for prevention? And how do we identify if an injury has occurred?

I've been a PT for going on 15 years and have spent my entire career mainly in outpatient physical therapy, treating vestibular and neurological disorders, and focusing a lot on concussions. In fact, I used to teach nationally on this topic! As a physical therapist, it's a passion of mine and when I saw the statistics surrounding concussions and equestrians, I wasn't surprised given the dangers of our sport but I wanted to see more attention given to the aspects of prevention and treatment, including the stats on helmets. So, this month is extra special for me. Please stay tuned to learn more.

I love that this word and concept is getting more and more attention in the riding world. Proprioception IS something you can train and build, and I agree on the benefits that are listed here!

The first important step to building this foundational skill set of better breathing is identifying the muscles that are involved so you can isolate and engage them. The most important muscle we have to talk about is the DIAPHRAGM.
