Juneteenth, officially known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on June 19th. It commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, specifically the day in 1865 when news of freedom reached the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas. This occurred more than two years after President Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which declared slaves in Confederate states to be free.
Juneteenth holds deep significance as a day of remembrance and celebration of African American history, culture, and achievements. It recognizes the ongoing struggle for civil rights and racial equality and serves as a day for reflection, education, and community gatherings.
