National Nutrition Month: Enteral Nutrition Simplified – What Caregivers Should Know
March is National Nutrition Month®, an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to highlight the importance of making informed food and nutrition choices. For many individuals with medical conditions, proper nutrition doesn’t always happen through traditional eating. That’s where enteral nutrition—also known as tube feeding—plays a vital role.

Enteral nutrition may be needed due to swallowing difficulties, surgery recovery, neurological conditions, or other medical concerns. When used correctly, it supports healing, strength, immune function, and overall well-being.

Feeding tubes may include:
NG (nasogastric) tubes – inserted through the nose into the stomach
G-tubes (gastrostomy tubes) – placed directly into the stomach
J-tubes (jejunostomy tubes) – placed into the small intestine
Each patient’s plan is carefully designed by their healthcare provider or registered dietitian to ensure they receive the right balance of calories, protein, fluids, vitamins, and minerals.

What caregivers should remember:
Follow the prescribed formula and schedule
Practice proper hand hygiene and tube care
Monitor for redness, discomfort, or feeding issues
Store formula and supplies properly

This National Nutrition Month, we recognize the caregivers who play a crucial role in supporting loved ones receiving enteral nutrition. With the right tools, guidance, and support, you can feel confident in providing safe and effective care at home.
