What Are the Main Differences Between COPD & Asthma?
COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and asthma are both chronic lung conditions that affect breathing, but they have some key distinctions. Here's a breakdown of the main differences:
Underlying Cause: COPD is primarily caused by damage to the lungs, often due to long-term exposure to cigarette smoke. This damage leads to narrowed airways and loss of lung elasticity, making it difficult to exhale fully. Asthma, on the other hand, is an inflammatory condition where the airways become hyperreactive to certain triggers. These triggers can cause the airways to narrow and produce mucus, leading to wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.
Symptoms and Progression: COPD symptoms typically worsen over time, with a persistent cough, difficulty breathing, and a feeling of tightness in the chest. Asthma symptoms can come and go, often triggered by allergens, irritants, or exercise. Asthma attacks can be sudden and severe, but with proper medication, they can usually be brought under control. While both conditions can limit your ability to breathe, COPD is generally considered a more progressive disease with fewer treatment options to reverse lung damage.
