World Multiple Sclerosis Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the disease and to provide support to those that live with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) each day.

There are approximately 2.3 million people that are impacted by this disease. MS is a disease of the brain and spinal cord. It is an unpredictable disease and effects each person differently. If you notice you have similar symptoms you should discuss it with your physician.

It is a potentially disabling illness that causes the immune system to attack the protective sheath that covers nerve fibers which in turn causes communication problems between your body and brain. This disease can cause permanent or deteriorating damage to the nerves in the body.

Symptoms of MS are numbness or weakness in the limbs typically on one side of the body at a time. Some people experience electric shock sensations that occur with certain movements. Some develop tremors, lack of coordination, or an unsteady gait in their walk. Some other symptoms may include visual impairments, slurred speech, fatigue, and dizziness.

There is no cure for MS, but there are treatments that help slow the progression of MS and lessen symptoms. Through research, hopefully one, day their will be. To help those impacted by MS learn more about the condition, contribute through donations, and help others understand if you live with MS how the condition impacts your life.

Today is National Sunscreen Day and we want to talk about your beautiful skin. Your skin is the largest organ on your body, and it is susceptible to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. UV rays are associated with the development of skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, an estimated 3.6 million cases diagnosed in the U.S. each year. This very preventable cancer can be prevented with the use of sunscreen and avoiding tanning.

Sunscreen comes in many forms such as lotions, creams, gels, sticks, or sprays. On sunscreen containers you will see the acronym SPF (Sun Protection Factor), which measures how much protection it can offer from UVB and UVA rays from the sun. You should wear a sunscreen product with an SPF of at least 30 and reapply every two hours. You should reapply more often if you are swimming or sweating. Sunscreen should be applied no matter how dark or light your skin complexion is. Everyone’s skin is vulnerable to damaging UV rays. As summer creeps in, make sure you protect your skin!
