Looking to brighten up someone’s day? Today is International Give Flowers to Someone Day.

Giving someone flowers is a great way to show love, appreciation, and gratitude. You also don’t need a reason to do it at all! You can make someone’s day by giving them a flower and telling them how much they mean to you.

Take some time today to spread some kindness with flowers! 🌹💐🌷

Empowering Conversations & Compassion

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Take a moment to check in with a friend, family member, or colleague. Consider making a charitable donation to a local organization.
Raising awareness goes beyond sharing facts; it’s about creating safe, welcoming spaces for honest conversations and advocating for accessible resources. Let’s use this month as a spark for lasting change and remember that mental health & wellness matter every day.

Today is International Nurse’s Day! Nurses are a crucial part of the healthcare system by working to save and improve lives.

International Nurse’s Day is held each year on May 12th to commemorate the birthdate of Florence Nightingale, the mother of modern nursing. Nightingale served as a manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean war to offer medical care for wounded soldiers.

Nurses are at risk of worsening mental health due to high levels of burnout and exhaustion. They also often experience compassion fatigue and are exposed to traumatic situations and stress.

It is important that we take time today to appreciate the nurses in our lives. Make sure to check out our website for resources and mental health support.

Did you know May is Better Sleep Month?

May is recognized as Better Sleep Month, encouraging everyone to prioritize their rest. Created in 1978 by the Better Sleep Council, the mission aims to educate people on the connection between good sleep, a healthy body, and quality of life.

Did you know that over one-third of adults sleep less than seven hours a night?

Sleep is also an important factor in maintaining mental well-being. Sleep helps to reduce stress and anxiety. Sleep also improves your focus, sharpens your attention span, and helps to process emotion.

Happy Mother’s Day!

You may not know, but NAMI was created by two mothers who both had children who suffered from schizophrenia. They were disappointed by the lack of resources and support for those who suffered from mental illness.

They took matters into their own hands and worked to gather other families who struggled with the same issue. After their work gained attention and support across the country, the two went on to create the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, which later turned into the National Alliance on Mental Illness!

Their work is still prevalent and important to this day. With all of it stemming from the love of mothers for their children.

Happy Mental Health Awareness Month!

Every year, May is designated as Mental Health Awareness Month. Founded by Mental Health America in 1949, the month of May is designed to encourage mental wellness and well-being.

It is at this time of the year that mental health awareness is brought into the spotlight. There are so many ways to get involved! NAMI Maine is always happy to work with volunteer groups and organizations, or we encourage you to reach out and learn more about our programs and initiatives here in Maine!

This May, let's work together to reaffirm our commitment to our own mental health, and bring awareness to the importance of caring for our community’s mental health as part of our whole, as equal and crucial as our physical health. Mental Health IS Health!
