Well it’s been a little while since I’ve posted here! I’m excited to share that I am in the final weeks of carrying our little boy. I supported my last birth in March, which was so beautiful and especially special because I witnessed one of my closest life-long friends become a mom. And now I focus on preparing myself for my own upcoming birth! I would greatly appreciate all your prayers and positivity in this season.

Many of you know that my #1 role is stay at home mom to my soon-to-be two children. Therefore, I am taking a break from births until at least next summer (2023), so I can prioritize serving my family. From there, client priority will be given to friends, family and my beloved repeat clients! 💛

While I’m not serving in the birth world, I hope to grow my lactation counseling services in the next year! Be on the lookout! 💛

These photos are so special to me! On November 1st I had the pleasure to doula for my good friend in her home as they welcomed their daughter. Madi truly surrendered to God’s divine plan throughout the birth. She trusted the process and handled each wave with grace. You’re incredible my sweet friend. Congratulations to this new family of four. Thank you for letting me be apart of it. 💛

In honor of , let’s normalize out of hospital birth 👏

In the Twin Cities, we are blessed to have a large community of home birth midwives as well as four freestanding midwifery-led birth centers. There are also birth centers and midwives in rural Minnesota!

If you are a low-risk mother who desires an unmedicated birth, my #1 recommendation is to chose out of hospital. We need to change our mindset from birth being a medical “problem” that needs to be treated, to a normal female body process that only occasional needs medical intervention. We’ve been doing this since the dawn of time. 👏

During your prenatal appointments you are monitored for issues that would risk you out of their care. Midwives have equipment to manage postpartum hemorrhage, neonatal resuscitation, and for maternal repairs. The research is very supportive of out of hospital birth being a safe option for low risk moms and babies. Your risk of cesarean, pain medication, and labor induction is drastically lowered. And, you get to be in a comfortable, safe and cozy environment!

Postpartum is such a delicate time in a mother’s life. Hormones are rebalancing, there’s physical healing, and learning about life with their baby whether it’s the first or fourth. It can be an incredibly emotional time as well, for weeks or months. Here’s some tips to make this special time a little easier and be proactive in avoiding postpartum depression and anxiety ~
- Hire a postpartum doula! PP doulas come to your home to care for you, your home, and/or your newborn while you rest. Ask me for local recommendations!
- Prepare meals that you can freeze while you are pregnant, and then throw in the crockpot when baby comes.
- Take a breastfeeding class prenatally. Learning how to breastfeed can be a major stress factor during the postpartum period. By taking a class you will have a greater understanding of the basics and what’s normal. & on that note, research a good lactation professional in your area and make sure to get in for an appointment in the first week after baby is born!
- Create boundaries for visitors. Do not be afraid to say no.
- Know the signs and risk factors for postpartum depression & anxiety
- Make a game plan with your midwife or OB while pregnant, if you have previously struggled with anxiety or depression, since this puts you at a greater risk.

One thing I love about this job is the dads I get to work with. A common misconception is that you don’t need a doula because you’re partner should be support enough.

The dad and doula get to team up in supporting the woman through labor. I give him suggestions on how to support her, and he helps the oxytocin flow (important for labor) because of the love between them. Sometimes the dad and I even get to share snacks, jokes and stories together between her contractions.

My favorite thing is watching dads be humbled and in awe of their wives during birth. The miracle of their baby being born, all thanks to her. Bringing a child into the world together will bring a couple’s relationship to a whole new level. 💗

The first days & weeks postpartum are a delicate time of healing, learning and bonding with your baby. Let go of the pressure to make sure everyone gets to meet your newborn. Just because you are close to or related to anyone doesn’t mean they have a right to come and “ooh and aah” over the baby YOU grew and birthed.

Also, can we switch the focus from meeting the new baby and buying tiny clothes for them to respecting the postpartum mom’s privacy and bringing her nourishing meals instead?

It’s been a hot minute since I have posted here. I have been one busy doula through the summer attending births, meetings, & completing a 45 hour lactation course through University California San Diego.

I’m exciting to share that Cassie Miller Doula Services is rebranding to… CLM Motherhood Services. 🌸

This business was born from my motherhood story and a newfound passion for birth and uplifting new moms.

New services being offered are in-home lactation counseling, and a breastfeeding class is being dreamed up!

I am also still accepting birth doula clients, but with limited availability on dates, since my full time position is mama to an almost one year old. 💗

I’m excited to connect with & support you, my fellow MN mothers!

I couldn’t let World Breastfeeding Week get by without chiming in. This week is so important because 6/10 US mothers quit breastfeeding before they were really ready. Moms NEED support & encouragement, proper education, and normalization of breastfeeding rather than normalization of formula.

Yes, fed is best. But you know what’s even better? Informed. Breastmilk is the perfect food for babies, and is recommended all the way up to 2 years old (and beyond). If you’re struggling, you need to seek support from a lactation professional (& your pediatrician is not a lactation professional).

Mamas, don’t feel like you need to hide to feed your baby. You’re doing what you were designed to do. Breastfeeding is challenging, dedicating, and a gift.

No matter what amount of breastmilk you gave your baby, you are incredible and have done such an amazing job!

I love this picture of me & my little side kick. My #1 job is being her mother, but I absolutely love being a doula!

Fun fact: Lydia attended doula training with me when she was 10 weeks old. Now how cool would it be if she grew up and became a doula too, or possibly a midwife? Whatever she does I’m just happy she’s my girl 💞

Today we show extra appreciation for midwives! 💞 If you don’t know much about midwifery I highly encourage you to listen to today’s (Evidence Based Birth) podcast “Evidence on Midwives”. The history is fascinating and heartbreaking all the same (side note, you should also go watch The Business of Being Born).

Thank you to midwives around the world, midwives throughout history, and to the midwives who cared for me & my daughter. Midwives, you save lives! ✨
