Turning Back Time: Moving Like a 20-Year-Old When You're Almost 70!

Older adults can maintain youth-like levels of physical function—if they lift weights. A new study compared older adults (~69 yr) who resistance trained to young adults (~24 yrs) who did not. The result? On key measures like:

• Chair-stand performance
• 6-minute walk test
• Timed up-and-go

➡️ Older lifters performed as well as (or better than) young non-lifters.
No gimmicks.
No biohacks.
No pre-exercise protein.
No creatine.
No fancy pixie dust…

put on a presentation at Cedar Commons by Hartford Healthcare yesterday on how different styles of exercise are beneficial to the many health conditions we face as we age, such as arthritis, poor balance, joint replacements, and more. We all know it helps with strength and weight loss, but we touched on non-traditional benefits of exercise, directly relating to their day to day struggles to better motivate them!

Our presentation consisted of
📖 30 minute educational piece on the many benefits of exercise, focusing on neurological and coordination benefits, as well as strength
💪🏼 15 minute functional interval exercise class
🧘 15 minutes of balance and Tai Chi principles to slow down their movements, for better focus and better movement quality

Participants loved the class and the variety of movement styles along with the benefits of each one, focusing on new information that is pertinent to their current health conditions.

This is a client who told me she would never enjoy exercise

This is a client that I told me the day we did her eval, she likely wouldn’t be a member for long

She told me she felt uncoordinated when exercising

She never felt strong enough to

Quit PT early for her injuries because the system wasn’t out to improve her, she was just another scheduled session

She thought there was no chance for her to get stronger, or to even enjoy her time at the gym

kept her on track. Nearly 3 years later, she referenced maybe being addicted to exercise 😉
