Henrietta Lacks (1920-1951)
is the woman who in death saved countless lives!

She died at 31 of cervical cancer. Her cell tissue was removed for medical research (without permission, usual practice back in the day). Her cells multiplied and survived at an extraordinarily high rate and are renowned worldwide as the "HeLa line' or the 'gold standard' of cell lines. They are an important, if not the most important cell sample to this day!

The first human cell line and is the greatest discovery that helped develop numerous cures, studies and technologies that we have today.

Henrietta Lacks was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in December 2020.

----------------------------------
Today, thanks to countless research, we can prevent the development of cervical cancer.

The most common form of cervical cancer starts with pre-cancerous changes!

If a pre-cancer cell is found it can be treated, keeping it from turning into cervical cancer.

So how do we find those pre-cancer cells? By performing a Pap smear and a HPV test!

These tests are done on your annual check-up and are critically important as a prevention method!

There are risk factors and conditions that can increase the odds of developing cervical cancer:
Infection by the human papillomavirus (HPV)
Unprotected s*x - condom remove skin to skin contact, thus preventing the transmission of HPV
Smoking
Weakened immune system
Chlamydia infection
HIV

We invite you to visit the American Cancer Society for more information.

Experiencing pelvic pain?

Pelvic pain can start suddenly and usually doesn’t last long. However, if it persists and lasts for months, you are experiencing chronic pelvic pain.

Not all pelvic pain is a sign of something bad happening with your reproductive system. But you should contact your doctor at Greater New Haven OB/GYN Group for advice.

In order to answer your main concern, your doctor needs to perform a pelvic exam.
This exam lasts a few minutes during which your ob/gyn examines your v***a, va**na, cervix, ovaries, uterus, re**um and pelvis for any abnormalities.

After examining you externally, internally and by performing a physical exam of the pelvic organs your provider will have enough information to conclude if anything revealed is unusual.
You and your doctor will discuss any next steps, additional tests, follow-up or treatment that you might need.

As our patient, we encourage you to always have questions and discuss them with your doctor during your visit.

Pelvic exams are also commonly performed during pregnancy.

Our dedicated staff is eager to assist you with your pelvic pain at any of our 4 locations:

Why do they matter and how to choose?!

During pregnancy our bodies change and the amount of vitamins we take in is important for both mommy and baby’s development!

Two basic vitamins are important during pregnancy:
Folic acid and Iron!
They help prevent fetal brain and spinal cord defects and support the development of the placenta and fetus.

There are many prenatal vitamins out there and we do recommend them not only to our pregnant ladies but also to ladies that want to conceive in the near future. The reason being that the development of the fetus is crucial in every stage but especially in the first month of pregnancy during which most women don’t know they are pregnant.

Have questions or concerns about prenatal vitamins?

Discuss your choices with your provider in one of our locations!
