Just felt the need to share something with you, today. As many of you know, it's just me and my awesome husband, taking care of the rescue animals, here on our rescue farm. Every now and then, we get the occasional Volunteer... whether because they attend one the Ag Schools, and need their volunteer hours, before class resumes in Fall, or because it was Court Ordered...no judging here. I've seen my share of good and bad, however, I don't think anyone ever bothers to look at what their volunteering puts on Me. For instance... When someone volunteers, I now have to completely rearrange My schedule, to accommodate yours... this includes changing appointments, because I know how difficult it is to complete hours. 2nd: When we have Agreed on a Time of Arrival for you, because YOU chose it, do NOT arrive 20 minutes early. Believe it or not, I do have other things to attend to, as my life doesn't revolve around you. 3rd... And I cannot stress this enough, as it has happened more than once... DO NOT let your parents follow you around, Every single time you come here. And, especially, DON'T let them "help" you... ie: helping you lift feed pails, etc. It's not their hours, it's Yours, and it's Dangerous for them! And, every time I give you instructions, Don't look at your Mom, waiting for her to tell you what to do... she's not your boss, I am.

Honestly, even with QU, the lack of knowledge is astounding... I had a QU student fetch a wheelbarrow, and she grabbed the handles, and began walking Backwards, while looking over her shoulder... Who is raising this helpless generation?!? I'm literally at the point where I am going to stop taking volunteers. It's too much, and I have far too many tasks to tend to, then to try to keep unknowledgeable kids from hurting themselves, for a few hours a week... Heaven help us when this incoming generation reaches the age of supposed maturity...

So the first cut hay is in. It looks like a decent year. Today was a day to decompress. I chose to clean some of the field edges and fill some holes. I have great neighbors at Hindinger Farm and DeMatteo Farm who let me cut hay on uncultivated fields. So I like to be a good steward of the land and take good care of it. I enjoy what I do and appreciate those who went before me. In the field is my "quiet" time. Most of my tractors are from friends and neighbors no longer with us. So those folks are riding along in my head. When my grandfather left his home on the dairy farm in Canada they still took in loose hay by hand. What would he think to see me baling hay. Today working the edges of the field I moved large rocks effortlessly with modern equipment. Thinking of the folks who may have struggled for days with horses to get them there. So much more to farming than what the casual observer sees. It's a heritage and a history lesson if you take the time to see it.

Today's job. First hay of the season. I bit tired and sore. But it will help keep the critters fed.
