Your apologies are lost in the echo chamber of your disrespect.
That’s your mess to clean up, not mine.

This is for when the people in dire need/pain are challenged to be positive about it.

Or, when someone comes forward about the a person who has done tremendous harm to them, and are told they need to forgive.

There is extreme tone deafness in the way hurt people are treated when they are trying to get help. Many underlying hints suggest everyone else would be handling the same circumstances better if it had happened to them.

Instead of: “Stop living in the past.” try “I can’t imagine how hard that is to remember.”

Instead of: “You need to let that go.” try “It sounds like that has been very costly.”

Instead of “You just need to…” try asking them what they need. If they know, they will tell you. But, it will never be a message that suggests they should be handling things better, when they are healing from trauma they did not ask for.

If you want to be more emotionally mature, it’s not enough to just acknowledge, “Yes I know I am selfish, bossy, demanding, etc.” Real emotional maturity is when you actively work to change those immature behaviors and grow yourself up into the wise adult you are capable of being.
It means making amends when you slip back into old behaviors and making the necessary adjustments so you don’t repeat bad behavior in the future. Not everyone is willing to do this uncomfortable work, but it is absolutely necessary for good mental health and healthy relationships!

This is what is misinterpreted often:

When there are demands on how a person heals, you fail to see how desperate they are to find safety. Do they know that it’s safety they’re looking for? Probably not. But it’s often an attempt to find the opposite feeling of what they experienced growing up.

We don’t talk about uncertainty enough. For those who grow up in environments where there is constant unknowns, consistent unpredictability, you work hard to re-create environments that are the opposite of this.

Again, do they know it’s safety they’re looking for? That’s unlikely. But what they do know is a stressed nervous system that was meant to be nurtured, soothed, regulated… And as a child not being able to rely on parameters that encouraged growth.

For those who relate to this, I hope you do find safety in people, and for that process to be respected as it unveils each next step.

Much compassion to you…
