A note from our nurses….
We have been seeing multiple cases of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) amongst kids AND teens the last two weeks. HFMD is common in young children, especially in the summer and early fall. It's caused by a virus and spreads easily in places like schools, camps, and daycare via contact with the blisters, saliva, stool and contaminated surfaces.
👶 Signs & Symptoms:
• Fever (often the first sign)
• Sore throat
• Painful mouth sores
• Rash or small blisters on hands, feet, or buttocks
• Reduced appetite or fussiness, especially in younger children
🩺 When to Call Our Office:
✅ Has a high fever lasting more than 5 days
✅ Is refusing to drink or shows signs of dehydration (less wet diapers, dry mouth, no tears when crying)
✅ Has worsening mouth sores making it hard to eat or drink
✅ Seems very irritable, sleepy, or not acting like themselves
✅ You’re unsure and want guidance — we’re here to help!
🧼 Prevention Tips:
• Wash hands frequently
• Disinfect common surfaces, especially where toileting/diaper changing occurs
• Avoid close contact with others while sick
🩺Supportive Care:
• Tylenol and/or Ibuprofen for fever and/or pain.
• Avoid spicy and citrus based foods
• Stay hydrated!
Most cases are mild and improve in 7–10 days. Children can return to daycare/camp when they have been fever free without medication for 24 hours, the sores have stopped blooming, and the blisters have dried out. Please call us - we are here to help!
