Is it really piriformis syndrome, or something else entirely? Many people are mistakenly diagnosed with piriformis syndrome when, in reality, the issue is often a herniated disc or spinal stenosis at the L5-S1 level. Since the L5 nerve innervates the piriformis muscle, inflammation at this level can cause piriformis spasms—leading to misdiagnosis.

In this video, Dr. Cooper breaks down:
✅ How piriformis syndrome and a pinched nerve look identical
✅ Why L5-S1 disc herniations are the most common cause of sciatic pain
✅ Why treating the piriformis muscle might only provide temporary relief

If you've been struggling with lower back pain, sciatic pain, or piriformis muscle spasms, this video will help you understand the real root cause of your discomfort.

We are grateful to the Town Topics to have highlighted our practice in their most recent edition. The article discusses the origins of Princeton Spine & Joint Center as well as some of our overarching principles. As Dr. Murphy noted, "While it is true that as people age, they may become predisposed to aches and pains, we reject entirely the notion that pain is a natural part of aging that patients must accept."
