Congratulations to the team of resident physicians from Kettering Health Dayton, who reached the final round of the 2024 AAOS Resident Bowl!

The trivia competition, hosted by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, featured 16 teams who battled it out for a chance to compete in the final round at the Resident Bowl in San Francisco.

Dr. Naem Mufarreh, Dr. Jaron Lohmeyer, Dr. Samuel Shine, and Dr. Zach Thomas represented Kettering Health Dayton's residency program, earning the second-place spot among all participating teams.

Congratulations to Tesia Payne-Adams, Kettering Health Washington Township's DAISY Award winner! Tesia works in Maternity. Her nomination shared:

"I came to Kettering Health Washington Township early on a snowy February morning and was fortunate to be in the care of Tesia Payne-Adams for labor and delivery. I am an almost 37-year-old first-time mom, and I was very nervous not knowing exactly what to expect. Tesia was an exceptional nurse and amazing support throughout my labor, delivery, and recovery process.

She calmly walked me through what would happen and patiently answered me and my husband's questions. She was proactive to ensure I was able to get an epidural even though I had arrived with labor quite advanced. She gave me a heads up about each step and even shared some of her personal experiences from giving birth to her two children. She was the perfect coach and cheerleader throughout the delivery process. She gave authentic encouragement and emanated a steady, positive energy. This made me feel calm and confident. At one point I even joked to my husband as the contractions were getting more intense that while he was important, Tesia was the most important person in the room.

Maya Angelou once said, 'People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.' Thanks to Tesia's exceptional care and kindness, I will forever remember the birth of my first child as a positive and transformative experience. We are grateful to have such a skilled and dedicated nurse serving our community."

Grant Johnson began his weight loss journey in 2019, wanting to become more confident. He lost 115 pounds following a caloric deficit diet but had trouble losing weight after a few years.

Grant wanted to lose more weight to build muscle, so he sought more options. After doing research and praying about it, he decided weight loss surgery was the right option for him and had a sleeve gastrectomy in early 2024 at Kettering Health Miamisburg.

After surgery, Grant had to learn how to eat with a smaller stomach. It was difficult, but he didn’t let it stop him.

“I was determined to do it and do it right,” he said.

Grant started working out regularly and focusing on his diet. Since his surgery, he’s lost 108 pounds, but his most significant change is his higher self-esteem.

“One of the very first things I noticed was an incredible jump in confidence,” he said.

With this newfound confidence, Grant plans to participate in the Spartan Race with his family and friends next year, an obstacle race that he’s always thought would be fun. He also has more energy to keep up with his toddler and newborn.

Grant’s weight loss surgery has changed his life in more ways than one, and he encourages others struggling to lose weight to consider it as well.

"Arcina was my husband's nursing assistant many times during his 11-day hospitalization. She consistently went out of her way to be as helpful as possible for him after a major abdominal surgery. She brought positivity and laughter to his room each time she was present. She is so full of life and amazing energy. Her compassion for caring for her patients and co-workers is unmatched. Senior drivers learned personalized safety tips from a CarFit event hosted at Kettering Health Years Ahead in Centerville. The event is part of a statewide program that helps seniors "fit" their vehicles properly for maximum comfort and safety.

Though each check is highly specialized to the driver being evaluated, the event offered a few universal tips:
đźš— Drivers should sit no less than 10 inches from their steering wheel.
đźš— Hips should be centered, and the driver should be fully back in the seat.
đźš— If you notice changes in your vision, flexibility, strength, range of motion, size, or height, consider evaluation at a CarFit event near you.

Congratulations to Kim Jennings, Kettering Health Washington Township's DAISY Award winner! Kim is a night shift supervisor. She was nominated by a patient, who shared:

"Kim Jennings embodies the concept of customer service to her patients in everything she does. I certainly don't know where I would be without her kindness.

I started coming down with the dreaded stomach flu. My symptoms worsened to include fully body tingling and numbness in addition to nausea and vomiting. At 4 a.m., I called the rescue squad and was transported to the Kettering Health Emergency Department in Huber Heights. In doing so, I had to leave my two dogs behind in my apartment. When I was admitted to Washington Township, my worry for my dogs' well-being only deepened. When Kim found out what was going on, she started the ball rolling with SICSA to get my dogs taken care of so I could concentrate on getting well. Through her efforts, SICSA picked up my dogs and will care for them until I can get back on my feet. I don't have the worry now that my dogs will be well cared for. This is due in no small part to Kim's efforts. I do not know what I would have done without her!"

Major Greg Stephens, a retired captain from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and current major with the Kettering Health Police Department, received the Peter Tobin Icon of Law Enforcement Lifetime Achievement Award!

This statewide award is given during Light Ohio Blue, a ten-day campaign to honor our fallen police officers and those who continue to serve.

Major Stephens is the award's first recipient from the Dayton area.

During his 34 years of service, Major Stephens helped start the Light Ohio Blue campaign in Montgomery County.

We are honored to have this dedicated law enforcement officer on our team!

Jennifer Tufts and Jessica Walling wanted to do something special for their parents’ 50th wedding anniversary in May 2024. But when their father, Dale Tufts, needed to go on hospice care in late October 2023 because of his lung cancer, the sisters quickly changed their plans.

They asked two nurses at Kettering Health Main Campus, Michaela Yinger and Silvia Hernandez, to help them plan a vow renewal ceremony for Dale and their mother, Frances Tufts.

“We just looked at each other and (decided) we have to do whatever we have to do to make this happen for them,” Michaela said.

Three hours later, Dale and Frances renewed their vows with a ceremony officiated by Chaplain Kevin Gill Walter in the hospital’s chapel.

Before the ceremony, Michaela and Silvia found a nice shirt for Dale, and Jennifer and Jessica surprised Frances with a new wedding band because she didn’t have one.

“Before we could even start, she just lost it,” Jennifer said, remembering her mother’s reaction to the gift.

Sadly, Frances passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack in November 2023, and Dale passed away shortly after in December 2023.

Nothing can fill their parents' place in their hearts, but the sisters are grateful to Michaela, Silvia, and Kevin for creating a special moment for the family before they passed.

Kettering Health Senior Living showed up in style at the facility's spring fashion show! đź‘— The models were residents of both the independent living homes and assisted living. They showed off their favorite outfits to their peers, with 97-year-old Lois's Saks 5th Avenue look being a highlight of the day.

Attendees were served scones and tea as they watched the models make their way around the room. Even Augustus Gullett, a Plant Maintenance employee of over 25 years, stepped up and danced, saying, "Anything for the residents."

It was a great way for the residents to keep their spirits high and look fantastic while doing it!

Mickey Stewart, stroke survivor and Dayton native, threw out the first pitch at the Dayton Dragon's "Strike Out Stroke" game.

Mickey suffered a stroke last year and worked with our NeuroRehab and Balance Center to regain his ability to walk and speak.

While Mickey states he still has some recovering to do, he was excited to be able to throw out the first pitch.

"Heather is an extraordinary nurse who is true to her calling (being a nurse)! She goes above and beyond for her patients and families! She has shown this many times during my grandfather's stay. When he had a medical emergency, she was on top of it. She advocated for him to ensure his needs and concerns were met.

He spent his 89th birthday in the hospital, and she made sure it was special! She and her team got him cake, balloons, and a card. Then the team filled his room and sang him Happy Birthday! He told us that these kind gestures made his day very special.
