As pools begin to open this Memorial Day weekend, let's be sure to make this Summer a "Safe Swim Summer!"

According to the CDC, drowning deaths among people with Autism are nearly 40 times as likely than among the general population. Fatal drowning in children with Autism typically occurs in bodies of water near homes in the afternoon hours, precipitated by wandering. People with seizure disorders, such as epilepsy, are also at a higher risk of fatal and nonfatal drowning than the general population. To protect those with developmental disabilities, making sure you are educated on water safety and drowning prevention is essential!

Here are some quick swimming and drowning prevention tips!

Congratulations to BCBDD Early Intervention Team Supervisor Sarah Silva on graduating from the Greater Hamilton Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Hamilton program as part of the 34th graduating class!

Leadership Hamilton is a community development and networking program that brings together local professionals to strengthen leadership skills, build community connections, and complete impactful service projects throughout Hamilton.

As part of the program, Sarah and her Leadership Hamilton class partnered on “The Dignity Makeover,” a community project benefiting The Open Door Food Pantry in Hamilton. This initiative will help create a cleaner, warmer, and more welcoming environment for neighbors who rely on the pantry by supporting improvements such as interior painting, new flooring, wall repairs, updated signage, and other functional upgrades.

Reflecting on the experience, Sarah shared:

"Leadership Hamilton was such a great growth experience. I learned so much about our community, connected with amazing people, and was challenged to grow both personally and professionally. Grateful for the experience and everyone who made it so meaningful!"

We are proud to see Sarah representing BCBDD through leadership, community involvement, and service. Congratulations, Sarah!
