Good news! Tangipahoa Parish will launch a new mid-parish bus route on Monday!

A new public transportation bus route will begin on Monday, July 1, to serve residents who need to travel from Independence south.

Tangipahoa Parish President Robby Miller said Tangi Transit will now operate a public bus route from Independence to Hammond five days a week.

There are 18 stops on the route which begins at the Independence Senior Center and continues south with stops along the way at grocery stores, Lallie Kemp Medical Center, as well as doctors offices, and government facilities. At this time, the bus will stop at each of the 18 locations four times per day.

The new bus, which is operated through a longtime partnership with the Tangipahoa Council on Aging, will run as far south as North Oaks Medical Center, where, for a nominal fee, a resident can take a transfer bus to proceed to Ponchatoula.

The cost is just fifty cents one way per rider. Transfer buses are also available at a cost of 50 cents one way.

“This is a great opportunity for residents who live in the Independence, Tickfaw, and Natalbany areas to have safe and affordable transportation to Hammond or Ponchatoula during the work week,” Miller said.

Routes operate from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
