🚨Beware fellow small businesses! This happened to us this morning!🚨 thank goodness my gut was screaming this is NOT right…
This morning a seeming customer reached out on Facebook messenger to place a large order. When I said I could send an invoice via square, they asked to use Venmo instead. They asked for my phone # (which isn’t odd, since Venmo will ask customers to enter the last 4 digits of the vendors phone number on occasion).
A little bit later, they said they had sent payment but to check my email because Venmo said the customer needed to send an additional $500 and I needed to upgrade my account to a “premium business account”.
Following my gut, I checked in my Venmo app for notification instead of just trusting the email. I had no notification that I had been sent payment, had a pending payment, or needed to upgrade my already business account. I then searched for a Venmo customer support # on my app and did not call the one in the email.
When I told the customer I was calling, they were extremely pushy for me to just call the number in the email instead of the support # provided on the app, and kept pushing me whether I called immediately and what “Venmo” was saying.
Please be on the lookout for scams like this and/or this scammer account! I’m sure if I would have fell for it, this would have resulted in over $700 being stolen from me!
