Sentara CarePlex Hospital in Hampton, Va., piloted Sentara’s first employee prostate cancer screening event — making it easy for our colleagues to get checked while at work.

✅ 20 men screened in 2 days
✅ Screening was a quick blood test focused on early detection

Why Sentara CarePlex Hospital? Community members living on the peninsula face some of Virginia’s highest prostate cancer rates, especially among Black men, who are 2x more likely to die from the disease.

📣 Sentara adopted new screening guidelines recommending Black men and men at high risk begin screening between ages 40-45. Men with average risk can begin prostate cancer screening at age 50.

We’re proud to launch the first neurology residency program in Hampton Roads, and just the fourth in Virginia, in partnership with the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University and Eastern Virginia Medical School! 🧠✨

The program will expand access to neurological care and help meet the growing need for specialists in the region.

Dr. Keti Gvazava, one of three inaugural residents, calls it her “dream residency” and hopes to continue practicing in Hampton Roads after completing the program.

“There’s a huge shortage of neurologists, not just locally, but throughout the U.S.,” said Program Director Dr. James Wyant. “We look forward to training a new generation and shaping the future of neurology care.”

For us, sustainability is more than a goal — it’s a responsibility. 🌿

Through collaboration between our Supply Chain, Imaging, and Sustainability teams, we converted 53 CT scanners to GE Healthcare’s bulk contrast injectors, resulting in:
✅ A projected 78,000-pound reduction in plastic waste each year
✅ Estimated savings of $875,000 in disposal costs
✅ Faster, more efficient CT scans for patients

“This is what we can achieve when we collaborate across divisions toward a shared goal,” said Lisa Darger, Sentara’s director of sustainability.

This initiative also helps decrease microplastics entering waterways and frees up valuable storage space in our facilities — redefining how we deliver efficient, patient-centered, and environmentally responsible care.

Healing doesn't stop when you leave our hospital doors, and neither does our care for your well-being.

Patients leaving our hospital who need nutritious meals can now receive a week's worth of nonperishable food for free upon discharge.

A refrigerated food locker that holds enough food for 15 families sits in front of the emergency department.

The food locker is open 24/7 for customers of the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank and patients being discharged from the hospital who don’t have enough food at home.

The project is the result of years of planning and collaboration with the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank, inspired by community health data showing 10% of Hampton residents lack access to healthy food—double the Virginia average.

Cancer screening is changing. We are proud to be part of that progress. And now, you can join us. 💛

We are proud to be part of the Vanguard Study, a national research effort to evaluate new multi-cancer detection (MCD) blood tests. These innovative tests can screen for multiple types of cancer—including bladder, breast, lung, and pancreatic—through a simple blood draw.

We're recruiting participants to join this cancer screening clinical trial. Adults ages 45-75 who have not had a cancer diagnosis in the past five years are eligible to enroll.

The results will help shape the future of early cancer detection and potentially change how cancer is first detected and treated.
