August is National Breastfeeding Month, and we’re recognizing the lifesaving power of donor milk and the incredible families who both give and receive it.

When Kelsey Angel’s daughter, Ryan, was born full-term, no one expected her to need NICU care. But unexpected complications changed everything.

“During those first difficult days, while we were navigating the challenges of being separated and waiting for my milk to come in, Ryan received donor milk,” Kelsey shared. “It gave us a tremendous sense of reassurance. We knew she was still receiving the vital nutrients and immune support of breastmilk, even though I couldn’t provide it yet. It was one less thing to worry about in a time that felt so overwhelming.”

Today, Kelsey is paying it forward by donating her surplus milk to help other families in need – just like hers once was.

As a student athlete at First Colonial High School, Rahquim Hobbs worked closely with CHKD’s Certified Athletic Trainers to stay at peak performance. But when Rahquim faced two challenges during his time on the field, an injury to his ankle in 2024 and shoulder in 2025, CHKD orthopedic surgeon Dr. William Roache was there to get him back in the game.

Rahquim committed to his recovery, working with CHKD Sports Medicine’s physical therapy team and training with our Sports Performance Academy to rebuild strength and confidence. Every step brought him closer to his goal.

Now, Rahquim is heading to Averett University to play college football and study cybersecurity. His hard work paid off, and CHKD Sports Medicine is proud to have helped him along his journey. Best of luck at Averett, Rahquim, we’ll be cheering you on! 💪🏽🏈

For 20 years, the Buddy Brigade program has brought comfort and joy to patients, families, and staff at CHKD.

This dedicated team of volunteer therapy dogs and their handlers has made countless visits to patient rooms, waiting areas, and even had costume parades throughout our main hospital!

Thank you to all of our incredible Buddy Brigade volunteers for two decades of pawsitive impact. 💙🐾
