This Women’s History Month, we recognize Dr. Ann Wolbert Burgess, a psychiatric nurse, professor, and pioneer who transformed how we understand sexual violence and investigate violent crime.

At a time when survivor experiences were often dismissed, Dr. Burgess helped define R**e Trauma Syndrome, proving that sexual assault causes real and lasting psychological harm.

She later worked with the FBI, introducing a critical shift in investigations: focusing on victims to understand offender behavior. Her work helped build the foundation of modern criminal profiling.

For decades, her contributions went largely unrecognized. But make no mistake: Dr. Burgess didn’t just contribute to the field, she redefined it.

Because of Dr. Burgess, survivors are better understood, believed, and supported. Our justice systems are stronger for it.
