Injured Hiker, Mt. Chocorua

Alton: On April 18, 2026, at 1:50 pm 911 Dispatch received a call from an injured hiker on the Champney Falls trail on Mt. Chocorua in Albany. The caller stated that she slipped and fell fracturing her left ankle. She was 3.1 miles from the trailhead parking area and was with a group of Boy Scouts. The injured hiker was identified as Joanne Payne, 51 years old from Wolfeboro NH. She was one of two counselors with six members of Boy Scout Troop 232 from Nashua NH.

New Hampshire Fish and Game responded along with members of Lakes Region Search and Rescue (LRSAR). They arrived at her location at 4:27 pm and shortly after began carrying her down the trail. The Boy Scout group was well prepared for the hiking conditions and had appropriately splinted the fracture and applied ice to reduce swelling and help with the pain. She arrived at the trailhead parking area at 8:05 pm. She was transported to Memorial Hospital in North Conway for evaluation and treatment.

Outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to purchase a Hike Safe card at www.wildnh.com/safe. The card helps support Fish and Game search and rescue activities. For safe hiking tips and a list of essential gear, visit hikesafe.com.

CPR Training in Schools saves lives! We received a wonderful email earlier this week that a high school student who received CPR training in her Health class by one of our instructors saved a life! She saw someone collapse, started CPR immediately and continued doing CPR until first responders arrived. We don't have details beyond that, but we believe he survived due to her actions. This highlights the importance of CPR Training in schools and emphasizing how well we train our CPR Instructors to share our passion for early action to save lives.

Another reason to enjoy a morning cup of coffee.

Coffee may not raise the risk of atrial fibrillation and may even reduce it, new research suggests.

Adults treated for AFib who drank at least one cup of coffee a day for 6 months were 39% less likely to have a recurrent episode of irregular heart rhythm, compared to those who did not have any coffee.

The results of the 6-month, 200-person trial were presented this week at Scientific Sessions, the premier global meeting for cardiovascular science and medicine. This trial is simultaneously published today as a full manuscript in the peer-reviewed scientific journal JAMA.

Some people may still find that caffeine, including coffee, triggers or worsens their AFib symptoms. If you’ve recently been treated for AFib, ask your doctor if continuing to drink coffee is safe for you.

Have you had your cholesterol checked recently?

If you watched this classic live in 2005, it’s time to ask your doctor about a cholesterol screening. Cholesterol tends to increase as we age. A simple blood test can tell you if you’re on track.

Update post from Gail. I can't thank enough our small but wonderful team at Coastal CPR and First Aid for keeping things running while I have been in the hospital. We've received a lot of messages asking for updates on me and happy to report that I am improving. I have a long road of recovery ahead of me and appreciate everyone's kind words and prayers of support.
