We specialize in Birth Center, Homebirth, Hospital Birth, VBAC, waterbirth, placenta encapsulation and delayed cord clamping. We have experience and offer support to pregnant people in many different situations including adoptions, alternative lifestyle, WOC, LGBT families, PostPartum Depression, PTSD, single moms, young moms and people with a history of sexual abuse. We serve families regardless of race, religion, orientation, gender identity, or financial status. We include your family and friends in any capacity that YOU choose because midwifery care is about YOU and YOUR choices. We provide you with all of the information that we have available and YOU get to make the decisions.

A Midwife’s Christmas

A stable
And animals
And friends from afar
Are gathered underneath a big bright star

There’s crying and sweating
And hands being held tight
As a mother works hard on this peaceful night.

A midwife sits, waiting and watching for signs that a new life is ready to join us Earth-side.

Her wise hands are steady and when the moment arrives
She catches the baby and waits for his cry.

He looks at her and she looks at him…
It is a breathtaking moment when life begins.

The mother says, “thank you”
And the midwife replies, “it’s an honor and gift to have been by your side”.

She gets everyone settled, cleaned up and fed, gathers her things and heads home to her bed.

The sun starts to rise as she’s on her way home and she thinks back through the night that this baby was born.

It had been a normal evening
Her children were running around
She had been preparing dinner
Her husband was just sitting down…

When a neighbor ran in and said, “we need you right now”.

She looked at her family and gave a great sigh
It had been a long day and she was so tired.
But she is the one that stands in the gap
So she gathered her things and headed out in a snap.

The job of a midwife is to serve and standby
To be ready to go in the blink of an eye
To hold on to life and to tell death to run…
To make every birth sacred and precious and sometimes fun.

She didn’t know that the hope of the world was just born into her hands
She’s just walking home and thinking through today’s plans

When she gets home
She kisses each head
Takes off her shoes
And crawls in her bed.

As she drifts off to sleep she thinks
I’m glad I was there
I hope that I gave them just the right care.

Our Story

Jeni Rector, LM, CPM is a traditional, community midwife that serves the families of SE Virginia. She offers Individualized, Non-Interventive, Evidence-Based care for Healthy, Low-Risk Pregnant People. Jeni has been working in the birth community for 20 years and, as a midwife, for 16.

Jeni believes that ALL families deserve to have a wonderful birth experience no matter their economic status, their race, their family situation, their sexual orientation, or their spiritual convictions.

She offers prenatal care, labor support, and postpartum care in the Birth Center, your Home or even if you are planning a Hospital birth. She also specializes in Waterbirth, VBAC, Placenta Encapsulation, Delayed Cord Clamping, Breastfeeding, Doula training, Lotus birth, Midwifery training and more.

The Village Birth Center opened in 2016, to fill a HUGE void in the birthing community. It is the ONLY Freestanding Birth Center in ALL of SE Virginia. Because of it, more pregnant people are receiving care... which leads to safer outcomes. The Birth Center is a terrific option for families who desire natural, traditional midwifery care or families that are coming from out of the area.
