The Alabama Funeral Directors Association has been informed by a member firm of a recent scam targeting a family. The firm reported that shortly after posting an obituary online, the scammer impersonated a funeral home representative and contacted the family, claiming an additional $800 was owed. The widow handed the phone to her son, who advised the scammer that he would address the matter the following day. The scammer promptly hung up, and the family subsequently contacted the funeral home to verify the information.

To combat this ongoing scam, it is recommended that funeral home owners, managers, funeral directors, and staff alert families during the arrangement process and advise them to exercise caution. Procedures should be implemented as each individual firm sees fit.

Please report any occurrences to the associational office as soon as possible.
