I keep seeing a lot of “chatter” right now on social media with regard to Pilates. What’s correct, who says it’s correct, is it safe, who says it’s safe? Who is this exercise appropriate for? And so it goes on. Here’s just part of MY thought on that…..The entire fitness industry is unregulated for the most part, not just Pilates.
**Personal Training Certifications**
- Many organizations offer personal trainer certifications, but not all are accredited or recognized universally.
- There is no standardized requirement for education or training across the industry.*
Group fitness instructors may not need formal training or certification.
- Classes can vary widely in quality and safety practices.
Nutritionists and dietitians may not require formal qualifications to offer coaching.
- The term “nutritionist” is often unregulated, allowing individuals without proper credentials to provide dietary advice.
Many Pilates exercises are contraindicated for a lot of people, modifications should be offered, hands on corrections should be given, you should be teaching to the bodies in front of you, not just delivering a pre-planned class that you don’t understand.
Does your Instructor have knowledge in anatomy & physiology? Did they have to go through a practical and a written test? Did they complete extensive training hours before being let loose on the floor? Or are they just looking at IG for material and following what “looks cool” right now?
