Yesterday, we celebrated the career of Captain Dan Essig. After 20 years of service, Danny will retire on October 30th. He served the Hannibal Fire Department as a great mentor to many. Danny was a dedicated member of Local 1211, often donating his time to our charitable endeavors for two decades. We will certainly miss him on shift, but wish him the very best in future endeavors! Thanks for your dedication and service!

🔥 FACT SHEET: The Real Cost of Protecting Hannibal 🔥

Over the past decade, the cost of essential firefighting gear and equipment has skyrocketed — while our budget has been stripped to the bone.

👩‍🚒 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) — the gear that keeps firefighters alive — has nearly doubled in cost.
🚒 Tools, hoses, and apparatus maintenance continue to rise every year.
💰 Yet our funding hasn’t kept pace — forcing us to stretch every dollar thinner and thinner.

This isn’t just about gear — it’s about people.
We’ve already lost staffing positions, and if funding doesn’t improve, more cuts are inevitable.
Fewer firefighters mean slower response times, increased danger, and reduced service for everyone in Hannibal.

That’s why Proposition 1 matters.
A ½-cent sales tax will support our fire and police departments — and it’s not just paid by local residents. Anyone who shops, eats, or passes through Hannibal contributes.

✅ Everyone helps share the cost.
✅ Our citizens benefit directly- from better-equipped, better-staffed, and more experienced firefighters.

Without Prop 1, the snowball of budget cuts and personnel reductions will continue — and Hannibal’s safety will pay the price.

What is Prop 1?

For the purpose of improving the public safety of the city, by supporting the fire and police departments, shall the City of Hannibal charge a City Sales Tax of one half percent (.5%), with the tax proceeds to be deposited into a special trust fund or account kept separate and apart from all other funds of the City to be used for the sole purpose of paying costs associated with public safety.

What Prop 1 will mean for Hannibal’s First responders?

Prop 1 will protect our police, fire fighters, and the public we serve:
• Our thin budget has forced us to operate
with minimum staffing
• Low manpower puts our members in
danger and makes us less effective on
emergency incidents
• We have already had to close one engine
house due to budget shortfalls

• Prop 1 will enable us to keep enough
fire fighters on the trucks to do our job
safely and effectively

Prop 1 will retain experienced
responders:

• We are losing our experienced fire fighters
to departments with more resources
• Prop 1 will allow us to maintain a
competitive benefit package

Prop 1 will Maintain our equipment and training:
• Our critical equipment is reaching the end of its service life, we need funding to maintain and replace it

• Prop 1 will support essential capital maintenance, fire fighter training, and equipment purchases
