August is National Breastfeeding Month! This year, we're celebrating with the theme “Forward Together”. The theme centers unity, solidarity, and hope, and celebrates the strength and determination of the organizations and advocates committed to advancing policy, systems, and environmental change in the First Food field and improving access to human milk.
As a designated Baby-Friendly Hospital, Hannibal Regional Hospital is dedicated to helping mothers achieve their breastfeeding goals. The “Honeysuckle Café” provides a welcoming space where moms can receive support from other mothers and guidance from a lactation consultant. The group meets twice weekly: Mondays at 5:00 PM and Wednesdays at 10:00 AM. Our goal is to assist with any challenges in the early days of nursing and offer a supportive community as your baby grows.
For more information about the “Honeysuckle Café” group, please call (573) 406-2122. No registration is necessary, and siblings are welcome!
Let's celebrate and support breastfeeding together! 💕

Did you know?

Foremilk and hindmilk aren’t two separate types of milk, but rather a gradual change in fat content during a feeding. Your baby gets everything they need from your milk.

Unlike an older child, your little one does not have a need for additional hydration from water. They get all of their hydration needs met through their milk!

Babies older than six months can have some supplemental water, but it should be limited to small quantities. Offering too much supplemental water can lead to them nursing less frequently, which causes them to miss out on valuable nutrients and calories that are found in your milk.

[Image description] A parent cradles an infant, as they look off to the lapping waves on the beach. Text reads, " Does my baby need water? In hot weather, babies may ask to. nurse more frequently to quench their thirst. Babies under six months should not be given supplemental water. Too much water can lead to a serious condition called oral water intoxication."

When researchers ask new mothers how much information about infant feeding they received during pregnancy about infant feeding, the overwhelming response is: Not enough! Many feel unprepared for what’s ahead.

But mothers who deliver at Baby-Friendly facilities are ready to thrive! Prenatal education on infant feeding is a core part of the Ten Steps. From their first visit, mothers receive information on:
👣 The health benefits of human milk—for both baby and mom
👣 Breastfeeding basics: positioning, latching, and recognizing feeding cues
👣 Challenges they might face
👣 Safe sleep practices and infant feeding
👣 And more!

Each family receives ⭐ personalized care ⭐ with ample time to ask questions and discuss concerns. Parents delivering at Baby-Friendly facilities are empowered with the knowledge to start their breastfeeding journey strong—from the first moment they hold their baby.
