An Optometric Technician encompasses the responsibilities of a variety of different job titles. As an Optometric Technician, you will be the first point of contact for our company. You will welcome guests and greet people who visit the business. To be successful as an Optometric Technician, you should have a pleasant personality, as this is also a customer service role. You should be able to deal with emergencies in a timely and effective manner, while streamlining office operations. Multitasking and stress management skills are essential for this position. Ultimately, an Optometric Technician’s duties and responsibilities are to ensure positive patient care, and execute clerical tasks to facilitate smooth daily operations at high quality standards.
Optometric Technicians are essential for keeping patient flow efficient by assisting the optometrist by conducting pre-screenings and testing prior to the Doctor’s examination, submitting insurance claims, and surgical coordination and much more.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Take detailed patient history and communicate chief complaint and medical concerns with the doctor
• Review prescriptions and/or patient information carefully and identify special needs. Consult with the optician, Doctor or Retail Management when necessary.
• Assist in or perform various medical testing as required by the doctor
• Communicate Vision vs. Medical Insurance and verify coverage
• Manage contact lens training – Insertion/Removal, contact lens care
• Schedule appointments and facilitate consultations with other medical facilities
• Perform basic clerical duties such as filing, scanning, and faxing
• Handle incoming and outgoing phone calls
Skills Required:
• Excellent typing and 10-key ability
• General computer, copier, printer skills required
• Basic Mathematic computation skills
• Strong understanding of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Confrontation management skills
• Excellent organizational skills
• Detailed oriented.
• Multitasking and time-management skills.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills
• Professional attitude and appearance.
Qualifications and Requirements:
• High School Diploma or Equivalent
• Physical ability to lift assist patients from exam chair
• Maintain HIPAA compliance
• Medical/Optical experience: preferred, but not required
• Medical Insurance Handling experience: strongly preferred
• Customer Service experience: 1 year strongly preferred
