Dartmouth Healthcare Foundations

Dartmouth Healthcare Foundations Healthcare is facing unprecedented challenges. Through a new approach to pre-health ed. we seek to disrupt this trajectory. We will post updates as we have them.

The current approach promotes a crisis of cynicism & demoralization that begins in the introductory stages of pre-health education. COVID-19 Updates:

Each year, the Eichler Fellows write a poem for the culminating project and read it at the fellowship graduation event (Featured poems: https://sites.dartmouth.edu/eichler-fellowship/in-the-news/).

Healthcare workers encounter long days, difficult patients, arduous documentation, and challenging conversations, and often make personal sacrifices. Conversely, healthcare careers are fulfilling and feed our souls with the successes, personal and professional growth, contributions to the ever-growing body of knowledge, advocacy, and meeting fascinating humans every day.

What’s poetry got to do with it? Poetry is a tool for the journey through our careers as healthcare practitioners. “Poetry is motivated by personal emotions and experiences, social commentary and advocacy, as well as the exploration of the human condition and nature. Writing poetry offers benefits such as creativity and expression not found in other forms of writing, emotional healing, shedding light on social issues, and inspiring positive changes in society. Poetry can help us express ourselves in a healthy and cathartic way, serving as a great outlet for our emotions and thoughts. Writing poetry can also help us make sense of the world around us and cope with whatever is on our mind.”(1)

Give poetry a chance. April is National Poetry Month. Is there a better time to try it for yourself? Here is a guide you might find helpful: How to Write a Poem, Step-by-Step: Examples and Analysis | Writers.com https://writers.com/how-to-write-a-poem-step-by-step.
