In Pennsylvania Dutch country, among the Old Order Amish and the strict Mennonite congregations who live their lives parallel to modern society, there remains the remnants of one of the oldest European magical practices found in America: Hex, or Hex und Speilwerk, or Pow Wow. In Hex and Spellwork, third generation Hexenmeister Karl Herr teaches the actual practices and examines the history of the SwissGerman traditions from which Hex and Pow Wow are derived.

Hex work echoes the magical arts that reach back to the earliest beginnings of human civilization. Evoked to assist people in health and earthly prosperity and to achieve what they legitimately desire in life, or to counteract the negative spell of a witch, hex is positive magic, never used for evil. Hex work is firmly founded in the Christian religion, with a liberal dose of SwissGerman folk superstition. The Bible is a great influence on all Hex work, which originates in the Gospel of Matthew, where Christ insists that all people of good heart and a pure soul could perform miracles.

Karl Herr is bound and determined not to let the oral tradition of hex vanish from the face of the earth. Among the many practices he's written down in this book are: verbal charms for healing, considered by many to be folk prayers/ the magic of stones and other natural objects/ folk remedies, such as using dried chickweed to stave off colds. Discover himmelbriefs, "heavenly letters" written either to God, or to gain the assistance of someone who is in heaven. Plus instructions for creating hex signs that can be used to reduce anxiety and control spiritual forces.

Something we’ve heard a lot this spring is “gosh, everything in here is so pricey, why is someone charging so much for something I could make at home?”

As a reminder, all of the items in here are made by small, local vendors (maybe your neighbors!), and Artisans deserve to be fully compensated for their work! Behind each treasure we house at the store is a real person with years of practice, trial and error, and the highest levels of craftsmanship.

BUT, we also are sensitive to the fact that the economy is… spicy right now, and folks are struggling to have their basic needs met, much less their spiritual ones. This is one of the reasons we are committed to keeping spell supplies affordable, and remind people that Magic is found within you, so technically you don’t really need anything from our store to consider yourself a Witch (though, we’d love if you visited).

If you are also struggling to source spiritual supplies for yourself, we want to extend a warm invitation to our next Witchy Trinket Trade, which we host quarterly! Stay tuned for the next date, and bring some trinkets to trade with other Witches in your community!

The Serpent’s Key Shoppe and Sanctuary has always been an outspoken supporter of marginalized groups, and we don’t plan on quieting down about it (though, apologies if I missed a group on this list!!) We were thrust into the spotlight before the store was officially open, and have been consistent in our support for social justice around the world, as well as for those in our beloved Hanover PA.

While the PA Tarot Reading Law may seem like a frivolous topic to continue bringing up, the history, implications of this law, and the obvious misuse of it by law enforcement officers like former Hanover Police Chief Chad Martin during the incident at my shop in 2023 make it important now more than ever to abolish as we see the rise of Christian Nationalism in America. It’s also one of the few things I feel I can properly advocate for, and make meaningful change in as a private citizen and business owner.

Here at the shoppe, we will continue to create inclusive spaces for likeminded folks of all faith paths and work t better the lives of our neighbors, one kind word or cup of tea at a time.

The Major Arcana presents a series of enchanting, dream-like visions that guide you as you navigate the emotional landscapes within yourself. The Minor Arcana presents four unique suits: Dreams, Songs, Skins and Honey. Includes 78 linen finish cards with burgundy painted edges. The 144-page full-color illustrated, hardcover book is a celebration of the paintings that make the deck magical. It provides insights into the card imagery and includes unique tarot spreads.

As part of our festivities, we invite you to create a small piece of artwork inspired by Spring to display on our Community Art Altar, and partake in the Downtown Hanover's First Friday Art Walk! It can be in any medium, but please be mindful of mess. Artwork can be dropped off starting at 4pm on May 1st, and must be collected by 4pm on May 3rd.

We’re so excited to welcome Beck of The Serpent’s Key Shoppe back to Cultivated Essentials Co for another workshop!

Join us for a hands-on experience where you’ll pour, shape, and dress your own herbal beeswax tapers using thoughtfully selected herbs guided by Beck.

Each participant will craft two pairs of candles, blending intention, creativity, and a little bit of magic.

All materials and guidance are provided.
