Hello everyone! It looks like summer is finally here, and with that said, we just want to let our awesome patients know that we are officially on summer vacation! We hope everyone has a great Fourth of July week, and we will see you all when we return! (Hopefully with a nice tan) 😎😆

This past Friday one of our assistants, Shannon, had the awesome opportunity to set up a booth at Enfield Village School for their career fair! She spent the day chatting with fourth graders about her duties as an Orthodontic assistant, while showing models of appliances and answering tons of great questions. The students really enjoyed the hands on experience with the models, as lots of kids have had, or are going through orthodontic treatment. They thought it was so cool to see things from our perspective. Shannon even went the extra mile and gave out mouth guards to kids, explaining the importance of wearing one while playing sports. On top of that, as an appreciation of each students curiosity, questions, and engagement, Shannon gave out customized Frisbees AND raffled off automatic toothbrushes! The kids were so thoughtful and even gave us a nice thank you card afterwards. What a great experience all around! If you think this would be a benefit to your community, let us know! We are answering another popular question:

"Am I too old for Orthodontic treatment?"

Dr. Neely says...

"No! You are never too old for orthodontics. Age isn't a barrier to getting your teeth straightened, or your bite corrected. Orthodontic treatment can work at any stage of life as long as your teeth, gums, and jawbone are healthy enough to handle the process. Adults often seek orthodontic treatment for cosmetic reasons, such as improving your smile. They also seek out treatment for functional reasons, such as fixing bite issues that cause discomfort or wear on teeth.

That said, the condition of your oral health matters more than your age. For older adults, things like bone density, gum disease, or missing teeth might complicate treatment, but that doesn't mean you cannot still seek treatment! Modern options like clear aligners or braces can often adapt! Some studies show that adults may see slightly slower tooth movement due to less bone turnover, but what matters is that it is still effective in the end! Consulting an orthodontist is the best way to know what is possible for your specific situation. "

This week Dr. Neely is answering a TOP QUESTION asked by past and present patients in our office.

What age should a child see an orthodontist?

"A child should be seen by age 7. By this age, enough teeth will come in to predict how the smile will form, allowing a chance to diagnose and head off developing problems. Narrow, crowded jaws can be expanded. Thumb sucking and mouth breathing habits can be treated. A huge benefit to early treatment is the potential to shorten treatment and avoid extractions later on. Your child shouldn't have to wait four years for a wonderful smile.

Want to chat more about early orthodontics? Great news! You do not need a referral in order to schedule a consult, and there is no charge for the initial visit. Studies have shown that parents are as able to accurately spot early on problems just as well as professionals! If you notice something concerning with your child's oral development, don't be afraid to give our office a call, even just for a second opinion. Happy smiles!"
