April is officially recognized for sports eye safety awareness, though some organizations also highlight September.
Sports are a leading cause of eye injuries among children 14 and younger, with over 30,000 injuries treated in ERs annually.
Regular glasses do not provide enough safety and can shatter; always use protective sports eyewear (e.g., goggles) that meet ASTM and ANSI standards.
Common Injuries include scratches (corneal abrasion), bleeding inside the eye (hyphema), and trauma to the eye socket.
Basketball is the leading cause of eye injuries, along with boxing, baseball, and lacrosse.
