Hanover Psychiatry

Hanover Psychiatry Hanover Psychiatry is a psychiatric and psychological practice of expert clinicians who specialize in emperically based treatments for all ages.

Hanover Psychiatry is a psychiatric and psychological practice offered by the Department of Psychiatry, Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth serving the people of the Upper Valley region of New Hampshire and Vermont and beyond. As an expansion of Department of Psychiatry services, the practice broadens the range of options for individuals seeking faculty-delivered, research-based and highly effe

ctive treatments. Hanover Psychiatry is an entirely self-contained entity in a comfortable, discreet community location that offers the utmost confidentiality in all of its consultations. The essential focus of the practice is to create and enhance real and sustainable value in the lives of those who desire care or are seeking a source for referral. In an atmosphere rich in personal control and close collaboration, the aim is not simply to remove impediments to living freely, joyfully and successfully but to promote growth and resilience, enhance performance and enrich life. At all times, the practice is inspired by and hopeful about the inherent human ability to heal and persevere. Expert cognitive therapy, pharmacotherapy (medication) and neuropsychology are offered for anxiety and mood disorders and for a variety of other conditions across all ages and, when appropriate, seamlessly blended in an individually crafted approach. We also offer mindfulness based treatments, ADHD programs, transcranial magnetic stimulation, weight loss programs, diabetes wellness, and substance use help. When appropriate, tele-video or telephone sessions may be an option, including for those individuals who are unable to leave their homes or do not live in the area.

A lot of families come to us confused about what type of evaluation services their child, adolescent or young adult needs. And it is no surprise that it is confusing when there are so many labels applied to these services and the children needing them: testing, evaluation, assessment, psychoeducational, achievement, academic, accommodations, psychological, psychiatric, Individual Education Plan, 504, special education, child find, medical disability, educational disability, learning disorder, dyslexia…

At Hanover Psychiatry, we can help you make sense of your child’s educational and mental health needs. This often starts with a brief phone call with our Child and Adolescent Psychologist who is also a Nationally Certified School Psychologist. With Dr. Shackett’s extensive experience both within schools and in clinical settings, she is well prepared to answer your questions and can help set your child on the right path.

As part of our doctoral psychology internship program, clients are able to see our clinicians in training at a heavily discounted rate. Doctoral psychology interns are very well trained, supervised by licensed experts, and are in the final stages of training before licensure. Our own Terence Ching, M.S., is a psychology intern who is very well experienced in helping people with anxiety and other difficulties with mood and well-being. Terence has completed clinical training in a variety of settings, including in-person and online individual and group psychotherapy for adults and adolescents at the University of Connecticut Psychological Services Clinic, the Anxiety Disorders Center at the Institute of Living in Hartford, CT, as well as the Behavioral Wellness Clinic in Tolland, CT. Terence approaches psychotherapy from an evidence-based and culturally attuned perspective, and specializes in cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) for fear-, uncertainty-, and trauma-based disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety disorders, and PTSD. Terence has also received training in functional analytic psychotherapy (FAP), as well as MDMA-assisted psychotherapy. Terence believes in his clients’ intrinsic ability to achieve insights and enact behavioral change according to CBT principles, especially when supported in a holistic and sensitive manner that respects and integrates clients’ values, beliefs, and learning and cultural histories.

“It might seem strange to respond to misbehavior with support and empathy, but kids right now need “much more compassion than ever before,” Dr. Klein said. Consider, for instance, how you deal with your kids when they are sick. You’re probably much more patient and tolerant of their whining and outbursts because you know they’re not feeling well. The situation now isn’t that different: When kids act out during a crisis, they are essentially saying, “I really need help right now. I’m having a hard time,” Dr. Bryson said.”

It might seem strange to respond to misbehavior with support and empathy, but kids right now need “much more compassion than ever before.”
