LEADING A HEALTHY INTEGRATIVE LIFESTYLE
In recovery, many people become so focused on avoiding drugs or alcohol that they sometimes ignore other aspects of maintaining their health. Many people substitute other unhealthy habits for the ones they have given up. Staying sober seems hard enough, but it is worth the extra effort to try to be healthy in other ways. When you focus on your health, you can cope with your feelings, feel energized to work on your recovery.
For people in recovery, abstaining from alcohol and drugs is paramount. However, many fill the void with caffeine and ni****ne. Both of these common substances are addictive on their own. To***co poses numerous threats to your health, and caffeine in large amounts can also have negative effects. For some, even small amounts of caffeine can worsen anxiety, insomnia, or other conditions. Other people in recovery sometimes replace substance addictions with compulsive behaviors that can also have negative impacts, such as compulsive gambling, shopping, or s*x. Some even become “workaholics.”
Instead of replacing addiction to drugs and alcohol with other compulsive habits that can harm you, such as excessive to***co and caffeine intake, you can choose what path you want to lead to improve your health.
I firmly believe that integrating a wellness-oriented lifestyle with working one's chosen recovery program can dramatically enhance the quality of sobriety enjoyed by persons recovering from addictive disorders. Unfortunately, millions of persons in recovery unwittingly short-change themselves of years, if not decades of joyful and productive living through succumbing to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and a host of other preventable illnesses associated with self-destructive lifestyle patterns. A prime prerequisite for deriving maximum benefit from recovery lies in taking charge of your health and consciously embracing a wellness lifestyle.
Curbing Ni****ne Addiction
While many people recovering from alcohol and substance use are smokers, most would like to quit. If you are struggling to free yourself from ni****ne addiction, give the A NEW BREATH program a discovery. A NEW BREATH is a method that helps you overcome the mental addiction to smoking by reprograming the thinking and behavioral patterns that keep you addicted to ni****ne. It’s a cognitive behavioral-mindfulness-based method that removes your desire to smoke by changing how you think about smoking (cognitive) and breaking the habit (behavioral) in 4 stages, during a 6 month coaching program.
A wellness-oriented lifestyle and associated benefits can be yours through incorporating these and other common sense wellness principles into your life. Remember, you don't need to attempt to instantly adopt all of these suggestions. Focus on a goal of transitioning yourself into a wellness-oriented lifestyle, one day at a time. Make pursuing health-conducive lifestyle choices a hobby and enjoy the process. To your health!
