On July 31, 2025, the team from was at the East Vancouver Farmer's Market raising awareness about leg health and the often-underestimated condition of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
What is a DVT?
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that forms in one or more of the deep veins in the body, typically in the legs. The most serious complication of DVT is a pulmonary embolism (PE), which occurs when part of the clot breaks off and travels to the lungs. This occurs in some, but not all, DVTs and can be fatal.
Symptoms of DVT may include:
Pain in calf muscle or behind the knee, increased when standing or walking
Symptoms are usually in one leg, not both
Swelling and/or redness in the lower leg
Long term after a DVT people can develop varicose veins or wounds on their lower legs that are a problem.
If you suspect you are experiencing symptoms of DVT, please seek immediate medical attention by going to an urgent care, emergency room, or call 9-1-1.
