Were you covered by leave policies through your employer after baby was born? If you’re answer is yes, you’re one of the lucky ones!

•••

As a Master-level educated and employed working woman, I was only covered through my employer for 2 weeks of Paid Leave. You read that right, 14 days.

•••

Now, my husband and I were lucky enough to be in a position for me to take my full Family Medical Leave (FMLA) time off- 12 weeks - but I did go back at 10-11, weeks because things were tight with no income!!!

•••

The United States continues to remain the only industrialized country in the world to NOT have a PAID LEAVE family policy. It’s time to change that. Consider signing today and a letter will be sent on your behalf to your Senator(s) bringing this to the attention of our countries leadership for TWELVE WEEKS of PAID FAMILY LEAVE. Link in Bio!

On this weekend when we reflect on the sacrifices of our fallen service members, we also recognize those who care for our hero’s. Husbands and wives, mothers and fathers, caregivers and professional providers, thank you for your service and commitment to caring for our service members.

•••

To that soldier, you are more than a caregiver, you are the hero to our hero’s in camouflage. You tend to both their physical and emotional strains and sufferings, without judgment, without request for repayment, with love and care, and we thank you for that.

•••

For all of those who are thinking of a service member who has given the ultimate sacrifice, our hearts at The Other Mother are with you. We will always work to honor you and your loved ones. 🇺🇸❤️💙🤍

•••

Wishing everyone a 2021. 🇺🇸

Stop asking her when she’s getting pregnant. It’s none of your business, and you don’t know the way words can cut someone when they’re already fighting invisible battles.

This week - Black Maternal Health Week 2021 - has been a roller coaster of emotion to say the very least. To witness black joy, black birth workers advocating for future generations, and perinatal workers listening and learning from our sisters to shift the landscape in maternal health. This conversation I’m sharing hosts a conversation with leading Black female professionals, hosted by our U.S. Secretary of Health & Human Services. This conversation offers solutions, innovative thinking, and most importantly, perspective from those doing the work on the front lines of direct social service care. I encourage you to take some time to watch the whole thing & listen intently to how we come together to save the lives of mothers and babies in their perinatal journey.

In honor of Black Maternal Health Week, HHS is convening a round table with advocates from across the health spectrum to discuss black maternal health. The B...

You ask: “How can I be apart of Black Maternal Health Week?!”
Our answer: “Believe her when she speaks.”

•••

When she speaks up about pain, listen.
When she speaks up about trauma, listen.
When she speaks about racial bias, listen.
When she says something is wrong, listen.
When she says she’s being ignored, listen.
WHEN SHE SPEAKS, LISTEN. 🤍

•••

When you encounter a woman who speaks of her experience, she is reaching to be heard. She is vulnerable, she is brave, she is open. Accept her openness whether you are the practitioner, the clinician, the volunteer, the friend, the family member, the mother, the partner - LISTEN.

I am so grateful for all the wonderful organizations, organizers, advocates, and storytellers who share their story to uplift those who can’t or wont.
