Tiffaney, a certified medical assistant with Wellstone Health Partners Orthopedics, was with her daughter on their way to her daughter's basketball game when she noticed traffic suddenly stopping. As cars parted, she saw a teenage girl lying in the road after being struck while crossing a busy street.

Tiffaney didn’t hesitate, and using her medical training, she kept the 15‑year‑old calm and still until EMS arrived. The teen was airlifted to the hospital with a skull fracture and brain bleed and has since been discharged and recovering.

As the helicopter took off, the moment hit close to home. The girl, who was around the same as her daughter, turned to Tiffaney and said, "Mom, I know I don't tell you this enough, but I’m so proud of you. Thank you for helping that girl."

This is just one example of Wellstone employees putting “People First,” even when a detour disrupts one's routine.

Congratulations to Tessa Alvarez, our April Power of One Award winner!

Tessa was recognized by an emergency department provider for her commitment to caring for a seriously ill patient who required a lumbar puncture. The procedure could only be performed with the patient sitting upright, despite her being extremely weak, confused and in significant distress.
Tessa held the patient in position — an effort that was physically demanding — and kept her steady during the most critical part of the procedure, even as the patient began to vomit. She didn’t hesitate, didn’t step back and didn’t lose focus, even as her scrubs became covered in vomit. Her unwavering dedication, composure and compassion in such a challenging moment exemplify the very best of patient care.
