What wouldl you want to know?

With so many children on waiting lists for speech, occupational, and ABA therapy, I’ve decided to hold an informal workshop that can give resources and activities to parents to do at home while they are waiting to start their perspective service. I’ve got an idea as to what to cover, but I’d like to hear from the parents.

What were some burning questions that were unanswered because your child hasn’t started speech, OT, or ABA?

Whenever I'm feeling overwhelmed with life, I try to stop and think of the kids that I get to work with. They come week after week and work on improving a skill that comes naturally to the rest of us. They do it without fear of failure, without being embarrassed, and without much thought regarding what those around them think of their abilities. They come in with a big smile, often give me a quick hug, and then they get down to work. Truly inspirational and truly a blessing to be a part of.

Friday's Fun Activity- "Simon Says"

Remember, I like to keep things simple. It's often the simplest activity or game that can demonstrate and teach language skills the best.

Play "Simon Says" with simple activities like “Clap your hands or Jump." It's great for following directions presented orally as well as learning action words."

If your child needs help, give it to them in the form of queueing. Demonstrate the motion while giving the command. You'd be surprised at how quickly children can relate action with it's verbal representative (it's word)!

What game or activity does your child enjoy? Remember, no activity is too simple!

The Gift of Progress 🎁
This holiday season, let’s celebrate the gift of progress—big or small! Whether it’s a new word, a clearer sound, or simply the effort your little one is putting into learning, every step counts. ❤️
Speech milestones may take time, but they’re worth celebrating just as much as the holidays themselves. What speech win has made your heart full this year? Share your proud moments below! 🌟

To all the parents of developmentally delayed children who feel like they aren't helping their kids at home catch up- What comes naturally to you as a parent is what you need to be doing.

Do you speak with your child even though they don't talk back? It's enough.

Do you sing songs and nursury rhymes even though they don't sing back? It's enough.

Do you show them their ABC's and 123's even though they can't read or count? It's enough.

Do you take them to knew places just to expose them to something new even though they don't seem to know or care where they are? It's enough.

Do you read them books even though they just rapidly flip through the pages and don't see to even be listening? It's enough.

You don't need to work harder with them. You don't need to drill them. You don't need to be their therapist. You are their parents and doing the things listed above is what I tell every parent of a delayed child to do.

Don't stress about what “more” you could be doing. What you're doing is enough.

Looking back through old pictures and missing old friends. Thinking about all the amazing kids I’ve had the honor to work with over the years—it’s truly a privilege to see them grow and thrive.

Whether it’s through their laughter, determination, or curiosity, each one left an unforgettable mark on my heart and made a big difference in my life.

It's easy as a parent to turn everything into a learning opportunity. When a child is behind developmentally, we do everything we can to get the child caught up to their age. And rightfully so!

However, it's important to remember that what we want them to do is hard for them. It's work and sometimes a very difficult struggle. Taking every opportunity throughout the day to teach them skills isn't what we want to do. Nobody wants to "work" all the time.

Be sure and make some time for the fun. Drop the therapy goals, the reinforcements, the cueing and the modeling. Just let them play. Give them a chance to be silly. Have some fun yourself. Get down on the floor and follow their lead. You'll both have a good time, it will be a nice break, and it will bring you close together with your child!

Have a great day with your family and friends!

I'm always looking for new ways to help kids learn and achieve functional communication. Often times, a child's ability to attend to something isn't long enough for them to learn. Attention and engagement are essential to learning.

Here is an old video of a technique that I had read about. It's the use of a metrenome or "tapping" in order to increase attention. I tried it out with my own children before I used it in therapy.

It didn't really do much for the kids that I work with. However, it doesn't discourage me from finding anything or anyway to engage a child.

Have a great day!
