June is Cataract Awareness Month! This month is dedicated to raise awareness about cataract symptoms, types and treatment options. An important preventative measure is to wear UV-blocking sunglasses to assist in mitigating the risk of cataracts.

Also, June 27th is National Sunglasses Day! Which reminds us to protect our eyes by wearing UV-blocking protective sunglasses.

Make an appointment today if you have been diagnosed with Cataracts to discuss treatments; and we also can assist you with purchasing UV protective sun wear!

The 2024 Total Solar Eclipse is April 8, 2024. Please read this valuable information regarding protecting your eyes while viewing the Eclipse.

1. That NASA recommends proper eye protection using the Safe Solar Eclipse Sunglasses only for viewing the eclipse. Be sure the Solar Eclipse Sunglasses have the NASA logo ISO 12312-12.

2. Eclipse glasses are NOT regular sunglasses; regular sunglasses, no matter how dark, are NOT Safe for viewing the Sun. Safe solar Sunglasses are thousands of times darker.

3. Looking at the sun during the eclipse without proper eye protection -- even for just a couple of seconds -- can lead to "eclipse blindness," or solar retinopathy.

4. This refers to the retina, which is the layer at the back of the eye. Photoreceptors, which are cells inside the retina, convert light into electrical signals. Those signals are sent by the optic nerve to the brain to create the image a person sees.

5. Staring at the sun during an eclipse can burn the retina. Mild symptoms can include watery eyes, eye soreness, headaches and light sensitivity but more serious symptoms include blurry vision, blind spots, dim vision, distorted vision and eye pain.

Please be safe and enjoy the Eclipse!
