Happy Monday Bookies!!!! Let’s celebrate and his 2023 book I WASN’T SUPPOSED TO BE HERE. This dynamic memoir will be discussed September 7th at this year’s .

As seen on Humans of New York, Jonathan Conyers introduces us to the teachers, his debate coach, a homeless man, and a boy named Diego who changed his life. Booklist calls it “a moving story about finding your supporters and building your future.”

Born into a family crippled by addiction and homelessness, Jonathan “failed” kindergarten and was told he would never succeed academically. But instead, Jonathan found ways to defy the limited expectations placed upon him by building a village to save his own life, and realize his dream to get into medical school.

Throughout this heartwarming memoir, we meet the unique and diverse cast of characters who made up Jonathan’s village and helped him change the trajectory of his life.

We asked our programming team for this year’s ( and ) their favorite book(s).

First up, ….

“I am a mood reader so it is always hard to pinpoint just one. My answer can change from moment to moment depending on my mood or how I am answering the question. I have favorites by genre, favorites of a particular year, favorites of a trope, favorites of a certain mood and favorites of the moment. It’s easier for me to say my favorite of 2023. I read 190 books last year but there is one book that stuck with me and I continue to circle back to moments in that book that were so beautifully written: THE THING ABOUT HOME by . It is the only book that I have recommended and EVERY SINGLE PERSON that has told me they read said that it was a five star read for them. Reading is so subjective so to get that sort of unanimous response tells me that my experience with this book is not unique. It is multi-genre so as a mood reader it satisfied so many different emotions that I tend to have reading. It was all of my favorites rolled into one effortlessly - romance, historical fiction, contemporary fiction, women’s fiction. Even the format of a dual timeline is one of my favorite ways to experience historical fiction. Rhonda McKnight is forever going to be one of my favorite authors. I didn’t read this book. I experienced it.”

Welp! This sounds like a book that we all need to experience. Check out THE THING ABOUT HOME by Rhonda McKnight.
