This Women’s Health Month, we are proud to recognize Dr. Deanna Yamamura for her dedication to advancing women’s heart health in the Rio Grande Valley. From studying abroad in Tokyo, Japan, to serving as Chief Resident and Chief Fellow during her medical training, Dr. Yamamura has built a career centered on excellence, leadership, and compassionate patient care.

Board-certified in Interventional Cardiology, Cardiovascular Disease, and Internal Medicine, Dr. Yamamura specializes in high-risk coronary interventions and peripheral arterial disease, helping women and men receive advanced cardiovascular care close to home.

A monumental moment for cardiac care in the Rio Grande Valley ❤️

On Monday morning, Dr. Flores and Dr. Hilmy successfully performed the first TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement) procedure at Harlingen Medical Center, marking a major milestone for our Harlingen community and surrounding areas.
This advancement brings cutting-edge structural heart care closer to home, giving patients access to minimally invasive valve replacement treatment right here in the Valley.

Procedures like TAVR can help improve quality of life, reduce recovery times, and provide new hope for patients with severe aortic stenosis who may not be candidates for open-heart surgery.

Yesterday, Dr. Guillermo Salinas attended a special reunion event hosted by Valley Regional Medical Center honoring a patient who survived a cardiac arrest while on the job at SpaceX.

Because of the quick actions of his co-workers, the rapid response from first responders, and the dedication of the medical team, this patient was given a second chance at life. Following the cardiac event, Dr. Salinas performed a life-saving procedure and placed a stent to restore blood flow to the heart.

This reunion was a powerful reminder that saving a life takes a team effort, from bystanders and EMS personnel to hospital staff and physicians all working together when every second counts. We are incredibly grateful to everyone involved in this patient’s journey and thankful to celebrate this remarkable recovery together. ❤️

Throwback Thursday to February’s Doc Talk with Dr. Flores, where he shared how advancements in cardiac care have dramatically improved survival rates for heart attack patients. ❤️

Dr. Flores reflected on learning from pioneering interventional cardiologist Dr. Hartzler, who helped advance the use of balloon angioplasty during heart attacks. By quickly opening blocked arteries in the cath lab, physicians were able to dramatically improve outcomes compared to older clot-busting treatments.

Today, balloon angioplasty can restore blood flow in nearly 95% of heart attack cases, and opening that artery within the first 90 minutes can significantly reduce the risk of death, proving that every minute truly matters. This same life-saving approach is used every day by our cardiologists as they work to provide rapid, advanced care to patients across the Rio Grande Valley.

Educational conversations like these help bring awareness to the importance of recognizing heart attack symptoms early and seeking immediate medical attention.
